Just read this novel again. The last time was in late high school or early college. It wasn't assigned in any of my college English classes. Reading it again as an adult, I was surprised at how much more gothic it felt to me this time around. I only remembered the very first ghost encounter, when Cathy Earnshaw grabbed the narrator's hand and pleaded to be let in off the moor. I didn't recall that other's had seen her walking the moor, years later, or Heathcliff's last days, smiling at thin air, nor his mysterious and inexplicable death. Creepy, compelling, and unsettling (in a good way). But still not Jane Eyre. There's a reason I named my daughter Charlotte and not Emily.

*sigh.* after the amazing success of the devil wears prada, i really expected great things from lauren weisberger. however, i felt like this book was just the same story wrapped in a different career. average-looking-girl-gets-fabulous-NYC-job-and-becomes-fabulous ... loses track of her priorities, and must decide if this is all "worth it" ... except this time it's party planning instead of "publishing."

GOOD READS SYNOPSIS: One miscarriage too many spelled the end of Max and Zoe Baxter's marriage. Though the former couple went quite separate ways, their fates remained entangled: After veering into alcoholism, Max is saved in multiple senses by his fundamentalist conversion; Zoe, for her part, finds healing relief in music therapy and the friendship, then romantic love with Vanessa, her counselor. After Zoe and Vanessa, now married, decide to have a baby, they realize that they must join battle with Max, who objects on both religious and financial grounds. Like her House Rules and several other previous Jodi Picoult novels, Sing You Home grapples with hot button issues. The novel also includes a CD of songs, each matched with a chapter in the book. Perfect for book clubs.(less)

I've read this whole trilogy, but I must say this was my least favorite. Still good, but just not outstanding :)
Reviewed by http://urbanfantasyinvestigations.blo... I was so happy to get this in the mail and jumped into it right away. McKenzie is human but she is one of the very few people who can see the Fae and read the shadows. She has been working for years for the King and is very loyal to the Fae Court. She is kidnapped by the rebels and they start telling her things that contradicts everything she thinks she knows about the battles between both sides. If that isn't confusing enough for her she is spending a lot of time with the rebel leader Aren and is starting to realize her love for Kyol the Kings sword master that she can never be with just might not be what she wants anymore. I cant even begin to tell you what I loved most about the book because it was all fantastic to read. I enjoyed the world that Sandy Williams has created. It was filled with creative places and the background and history wasn't overly complex. The plot was easy to follow and I honestly didn't want to stop reading. McKenzie was just a girl (besides her abilities that is) that just wants to have a normal life. She was easy to like and follow. She went from someone who always follows orders to someone who gave her opinion and fought for herself. I went back and forth between Kyol and Aren. I really liked them both and at times I wanted one over the other to win McKenzie's heart but honestly would have been happy to see either of them with her. THE SHADOW READER was filled with action and suspense. I was constantly on the edge of my seat wondering what would happen next and which side would take the lead. The book ended in a way that provided a bit of closure yet began a new starting point for the next book and I will be among the first in line to snag a copy of book 2 which I hope doesn't take to long to come out.

I had a hard time settling into this one. Exhaustion, plus coming off a riveting last read, made me feel like this was more work than pleasure. Like my sister, Camille said when I told her what I was reading, "Yikes, Em, are you depressed or something?" That pretty much summed up my initial feelings on the book. Upon finishing it however, I have to say I really liked it. What feels gloomy, ends surprisingly hopeful, and gave me a very pleasant outlook on life and its potential. I found the characters truly dynamic, in a way only emotionally constipated British characters can. All in all, very satisfying.
The characters hung on to control by their fingernails. And sometimes lost it. Good stuff.
