Being as big of a fan as I am of Tom Waits, especially his lyrics, I thought this book would be a nice addition to my ever-expanding personal library. Unfortunately, there are numerous typographical errors within the text of this book. So many, in fact, that it distracts the reader from the actual lyrical imagery at times. You'd be better off reading the liner notes of his albums, honestly. As guarded as Waits is about having creative control, I'm surprised that he allowed this to be published.

"nowadays man is the human of situation." says jose samarago. you can't make a decissin unless you are in the situatin. I don't believe the guys claiming they do the best in almost all prediaments. look at the doctor's wife when she had to forget ethics in order to save others. it was the best bad decission...
I still don't quite follow the story and I've been reading it on and off for 2 years, but everyone else seems to like it a lot---and the language is beautifully written.
The second (or maybe third or fourth) Richard Bolitho book. (My copy says the second book). Bolitho is now a Lieutenant, and in days of peace (1774) is lucky enough to have a place on a ship (A frigate called Destiny). Alexander Kent (the author) differentiates himself from CS Forester and Patrick O'Brian, both of whom are peerless (in my opinion)and even from Julian Stockwyn, by creating his own atmosphere via the insertion of short choppy ungrammatical sentences, and also by using multiple points of view. So instead of always seeing things from the viewpoint of Bolitho, we get occasional views from a midshipman or a sailor. The book was good, though it did feel a little empty sometimes. But this seems like a good series to pick up another one periodically.
Didn't like the movie? Get over it. What they did to that movie almost kept me from reading this book. REALLY! I had it sitting in a pile of library books for three weeks and I kept putting it off because the movie was just OK. The book... it's great. I can't believe how much they changed to create what I'd now (since reading the book) call a garbage heap of a movie. I'm going back to IMDB to drop my score and here... I'd consider a 5 but I'm stingy with my marks.

3.5 stars. I really liked the ending when everything tied together, but the book was pretty confusing at parts. I didn't like how it kept switching between different times. It was like the author wrote the story in order, then mixed up all the chapters.
If you're wanting an interesting read...pick up anything by Vonnegut. He is the master of stream of consciousness and anti-authoritarian writing - anything goes (not to mention, the book's pictures certainly make me feel like I'm reading at an elementary level once again). Breakfast of Champions is my go-to book when I'm bored and I highly suggest it to anyone in the mood to be entertained.
Good 'ole will is off and running on another adventure...looking forward to the next book to see how he saves Alyss.
