i was just about to write about "the glass castle," jeannette's recent memoir about growing up with her neglectful, grand, almost-hobo parents. i was going to write that i just couldn't get into bad-childhood autobiographies. that saying? that all happy families are happy in the same way and all unhappy families are unhappy in infinitely different ways? i kind of believe that--and i usually prefer to read about those same-happy families. i like to read memoirs about people who grew up in quirky but well-off families, or in emotionally distant but still functional and fine families. or with over-protective but adoring parents. with boring, straight-laced, old-school, or immigrant extended families. if the person explodes later in maturity, that's fine, but i usually don't enjoy stories about crazy, often sad childhoods. especially those i-was-so-deprived-and-then-i-flourished-so-wow-for-me memoirs. but, anyway, this is a graphic novel about a woman whose father runs a funeral home, is verbally abusive, kills himself in his mid-40s and has sex with teenage boys. and i couldn't put it down. so what do i know about what i like? i just know this was an amazing book.

Premise: All races have equal intellectual and societal potentials but have been restricted by environmental features. While I may agree with the idea, he bullies his point across and the evidence is not nearly as clear cut as he suggests. I would prefer a more honest reflection of the evidence, rather than sorting evidence to support his premise. Still, an extremely valuable resource for early human history and environmental differences between regions supporting human populations.

This is a very well researched and presented piece of journalism. Read it, but only if you're willing to seriously reconsider your omnivorous lifestyle. He forces you to make a decision, and I really can't imagine anyone reading this book and continuing eating meat.

Very funny book! Light, quick read. Made me like Tina Fey even more than I already do!

Really enjoyed this book - you totally let go of your version of reality and just enjoy it. I LOVE the way Jodi Picoult develops characters...simply beautiful. Almost too much for a vacation read (where I read most of it), but I loved it just the same.

This is another one of those books in a genre I’ve learned (from this book) is called “stunt nonfiction”…when a person takes on a project for a specific period of time (in this case, one year) and writes about it. The author considers herself a pretty happy person already, so you don’t have to be mired in misery to get some benefit from reading this book, or potentially launching your own project (she includes tools at the end of the book that you can use if you are interested in this). It is divided into 12 sections, following the calendar year. She emphasizes that her project is just that: hers. Yours will hopefully reflect the issues that are important in your life. For us writers: during one of the months (September) her focus is to “Pursue a passion”, which includes “write a novel”…and she does! Maybe we can too! The ‘everywoman’ theme popped into my head when, in the same chapter, she talks about how much she loves writing and reading and making books; these are her favorite things to do, and they are mine as well (and maybe some of yours too?). As a mother, I felt an immediate connection to the idea of Mommy Malpractice, which is with what she equated forgetting to buy the pumpkin (after endless procrastination) one year for Halloween. She includes decluttering as something that will make her feel lighter and happier, and it does (especially cleaning out her closet). Why was she doing this challenge? Her husband thought it was to gain more control over her life. Hmmmmm…..sounds like a good reason to do it to me. Some of what I took away from this book: act the way you want to feel, lighten up, use it up, and I will leave you with my favorite thought from her book: “The days are long, but the years are short.”

This is an extremely relevant Feldenkrais text for musicians. The method and activities are clearly and purposefully explained. I am using it for my own benefit as a pianist/vocalist and also to plan body awareness instruction for my choral ensembles. I intend to take classes or lessons in order to become more confident while using it in teaching.

I rarely give a book five stars; this one, however, has been off-the-chart useful for me. David Allen writes clearly and succinctly. I encourage my workshop participants to read the book and I recommend it to everyone who says they "don't have time" for whatever activity it is they're putting off. Being productive isn't cramming more work into your day; it's about knowing what is important and getting that work done first.

I read about this book on npr.com. Someone mentioned it, saying something like, "this is the best book I've read since Geek Love." So I said to myself, "Hmm, that sounds interesting" and looked it up on bn.com. (I get bored at work.) I read there that it is about a circus family that intentionally messes with their genes in order to breed freaks. And then I was hooked.
Totally hilarious story of a group of young "Teen Dream" contestants who survive a plane crash on a tropical island. They are forced to use their special talents to stay alive, which means finding potable water, ensuring that they practice their dancing and remembering to moisturize!
