** spoiler alert ** Nick White Mr. Rich English 10 September 1, 2011 Review # 2 Sijie, Dai. Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress. New York: Anchor Books, 2002. Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress is a novel by Dai Sijie set during the Chinese Revolution. Luo and Ma, two city boys, are sent to a small village in the hills for “re-education”. Working on the farm does nothing for their education, until they find and steal books that were banned by Mao Zedong. Luo and Ma also meet a beautiful girl on their adventure, who is the daughter of the town’s seamstress. Luo falls in love with the Little Seamstress and they start dating. One week when Luo has to travel to the city he asks Ma to watch over her because when he is gone many other city boys will try to win her over. Being put up to this task shows Ma how much Luo trusts him and sees him as his best friend. Ma does have to fight some boys off but in the end he makes sure the Little Seamstress is safe from the boys. When Luo returns the boys see their friend Four-Eyes. Four-Eyes is the boy who has the books that were banned. He asks the two friends for a favor, which upon completion they will receive a book for their troubles. After interviewing the man, they return and get what they were promised, a book. The author is Balzac and this book is just the beginning. After reading it they craved more. Four-Eyes is allowed to go back to his hometown and is thrown a celebration. Luo and Ma make a plan to steal the rest of his books. They sneak into his house and find all his books in a suitcase. “Me too. Loathing for everyone who kept these books from us” (Sijie, 99) When Ma says this it really makes the reader realize how much those kids were missing from their learning experiences without books. After some close calls they escape with the books, knowing Four-Eyes won’t chase after something he was not supposed to have in the first place. Luo and Ma read all the books they stole and Luo brings a book every time he sees his girlfriend and reads to her. Later on we discover that the Little Seamstress is pregnant. Ma travels to the nearest city and finds a doctor that will perform the abortion in exchange for the book by Balzac. After the operation Ma gives the doctor what he promised. Two boys who were sent away for “re-education” received just that. Luo and Ma learned more then they ever would by stealing those banned books. Luo and Ma also learn about love, between Luo and the Little Seamstress, and about how strong friendship is, Ma protecting the Little Seamstress from the other boys. Balzac and the Little Seamstress is the perfect novel to show you what it was like to live during the Chinese Cultural Revolution.
