Lily and Rule Cynna and Cullen A great second book in the series. I did have some mixed emotions on this one. It almost felt like Rule was with a different person, another person, another Lily when he was in Dis. He shared stuff with that Lily that the real Lily doesn't remember and is still trying to learn. I think this will kind of haunt them through a couple more books. I can see why the real Lily is jealous of what went on when she was working so hard to try and save Rule. We met Cynna in this book. I know she is important to Cullen and the upcoming books. I like the way this one ended.

gripping story all around and to boot you learn a lot about the origin of very basic things -like aunt jemima syrup and the industrialization of America. Fascinating book!
I love nearly anything Robert Penn Warren ever wrote-- everything. This book is no exception, Warren talks about the war's impact on American life and our psyche with his trademark prose and acuity. If you are interested in reading about the social memory of the Civil War this is absolutely the book to turn to. Not only is it fairly short and easy to read, Warren sums up what anthropologists and historians can't say in a lifetime in about 100 pages. This book is a wonderful addition to any Civil War buff's library. I cannot recommend it highly enough.
Good first novel by a new author. Written from the perspective of a little girl post mortem from her own personal version of heaven.
Read this for some research--and it served its purpose. I learned a lot about the lobster fishing industry from an island richly steeped in its history. The story was ok at times. I appreciate learning about the perspective of this simple lifestyle. I am also newly aware of another culture who appreciates the balance between give and take of humans and their environment. The book paints a great picture of this contrast of care (by the islanders, who must sustain their livelihoods) and disregard by the industrial fishermen, who can merely move elsewhere once they have squeezed what they can from the area. :(

another one of the fourth grade books that kind of changed my experience as a reader (all my teachers throughout my school career - with the exception of the bastard that taught first year english - had us reading things that were really quite complicated for our age level). in california, fourth graders at most schools do california history. at a catholic school, that means mission projects, but for everyone, i think, it means studying the indians. so for our unit, we got to read ishi. the story should be pretty obvious from the title. the things i remember most about it were a) the sex scene (which was recreated in the movie we watched after finishing the book) b) how sad it was, and c) how long it was. i categorize it as historical fiction, because it isn't a true biography (though, i suppose, what is?) and because it's more the idea of ishi that drives the book, rather than ishi himself. but yeah, actually really depressing.

3rd of the series and I just finished all three. They weren't more than mediocre reads and the heroines in all three were just plain annoying with the stupid decisions they'd make to walk into danger or accept someone's word as if they'd gone brain dead momentarily. The men were only okay and at some points, a bit too mean toward the heroine. The other thing I found disturbing is that Cameron likes to write about the sex scenes between the villains which are always twisted, weird, and just plain disturbing. Totally unnecessary to include them in the story as it doesn't add anything.

The only problem I found while reading this book was the fact that Kiedis is such a lucky pretentious fuck. The Red Hots are definitely not known for his voice, try the funky band, and by that I mean Flea. It's Flea. So basically Kiedis' memoirs are pretty much by the books for a 90's Rock Star--plenty of drugs, and plenty of women. These sections never cease to be at least somewhat entertaining. The main complaint with the book overall is Kiedis' constant, almost boastful, commentary. It's as if he tries to invoke jealousy in the reader simple because he lived it, you read it. But with a compelling enough story(with all that money and drugs it's got to be worth a few pages) I'd recommend.

I was very excited about reading this continuation of Pride & Prejudice, but found I had to stop. It was way too detailed in the sex department for my tastes. Not quite in keeping with Jane Austen's writing either. If you like a more racey romance, you might enjoy it.
