I love this series. There are plenty of simply, succinct annotations but also a lot of white space on the page for writing. I don't get distracted by clutter and I understand what's going on pretty well. I am so done with the Oxford School Editions. Hamlet, of course it a masterpiece. It's sometimes difficult for me to get into Shakespeare, but this play visceral, transformative, especially in the last act. A+

** spoiler alert ** Wow, finally a book in this series to rave about! I am really glad I kept reading the series despite moments of boredom. I started this book in the morning and finished in the afternoon. It was awesome. The destruction that has been threatening from the Middle East in the first 3 books has finally taken place, and we get to see how America begins to cope in the aftermath. Most books I read about the end of the world take place after the war, so it is fascinating to see what could actually happen. I really want to read about EMP's - I am really frightened that this stuff could happen here at any moment. I really need to get my food storage and 72-hour kits ready. Anyway, I am glad that by the end the characters I want to read about are finally together, and I feel like the real story is about to start. I can't wait to read the next 2 books. Yay!

such wit! such whimsy! see for example page 21: "(sighed) Ah... (Groaned) Ah.... Ah..... Ah..... (gasped) Ah... Ah... Ah.... Ah.... (percussively) chu, chu, chu, chu, chu, chu, chu, chu, ch, ch...girl" and who could forget the sinewy sensuality of page 56: "set flanger for slow sweep with regeneration and echo for ambient effect. rub pickhand along strings above pickup while muting with frethand. random harmonics are emphasized by flanger sweep." and the shocking conclusion found on page 89: H P H P H P H P T (sl) P H P T (sl) P H P T (sl) P H P 12 15 12 15 12 15 12 15 12 17 X 12 15 12 17 X 12 15 12 17 X 12 15 12 clean out your poetry locker, maya angelou. eat poetic shit, keats & yeats. this is the poetryest poetry ever.

I like Shel Silverstein's poems and am planning to use this book as a kick-off to poetry month in the library.

Ooh, what's better than a darkly delicious literary pictoral of NYC's turn of the century (20th) seedy underbelly? Gangs of New York didn't even come close.

I have kids ask for "creature" books every week. This would be a good one to hand to them. It has some creepy pictures (which I think is what they are mostly after) and a bit of history. Certainly not a thorough study, but plenty for elementary kids.

Cantor's In the Wake of the Plague: The Black Death & The World it Made is a concise work that looks at recent scientific discoveries to show the reader how the Black Death as a biomedical disaster affected Europe, in particular England. Although In the Wake of the Plague is only 220 pages it packs quite the punch as Cantor looks at the cultural, political, religious and human reactions to the Black Death. He moves away from the common myths of the Black Death (i.e. that it was just the bubonic plague) and paints Fourteenth Century England and Europe as a society already on the verge of change when the Black Death hit.

The problem with this book - the reason it's not the success it so badly wants to be - is not that there aren't moments of depth and prescience here. It's that those moments are hidden beneath layer upon layer of bombast verging on whining. Rollins has the charisma to carry us through and laugh with and at that in his exhilerating performances. Here, naked on the page, the pieces in this collection simply wail like a teenager at a hardcore show, but without the crowd, the music, or the sheltering haze.

I have never met anyone who has not been moved by this book, and I tried to delve into why this autobiography stands above others that I've read and why I suppose it does the same for many people. What I came up with is simply that this non-fiction work has elements of a heroic tragedy. There is a constant suspense created that pervades the entire book. You are rooting for Malcolm X to use his great talents to the utmost and to embrace everyone not just blacks. The climax of theis non-fiction work is his Hajj in which he returns to America with a more inclusive view of humanity. The tragedy comes when, upon his return, his savior, Elijah Muhammad betrays him and subsequently murders him. I'd recommend this book to anyone, black or white.

I really enjoyed this book and gives lots of examples of ways to take the path less traveled on. Which is a good thing. There are a number of different chapters geared towards all sorts of interests. Some I just skimmed because it wasn't my thing. Pros: it does offer a number of web sites and organizations to help research what choices and options may be available to you. Cons: This book is 90% geared towards someone just graduating college. I would have liked some more stories or options for people who have had a few years experience in the "real world."
