- you have to be in a rather cynical mood for this one. Really hilarious.

At the behest of Nichole, I've decided to read this Ayn Rand favorite too. Maybe this will be better than the two previous.

Brothers Duffy and Sumo live nice, normal, relatively quite lives. Till the day they are sent off on an adventure to Hawaii with their mysterious cousin, Come-and-go, and their aunt whom they've never met before. They soon find out things aren't as they appear to be as they are led on a perilous adventure into the heart of an erupting volcano. And questions are soon raised about where their mother really is and why they're being led into the volcano. Duffy and Sumo don't have much time to escape, find the truth, and hopefully...get out alive. OK the artwork in the book is absolutely gorgeous. Proportions on the figures can sometimes be a bit rough, but Wood does an amazing job of capturing people's expressions, letting us see the fear or the joy on their faces in an instant. The colors are standout and really sell the mood of the story, I especially love the depiction of the ocean and the lava as its flowing--the later is something that must people would have trouble trying to depict and have it look right, but Wood doesn't suffer from that all. In addition, he does an amazing job of capturing the highlights and the reflections of the lava onto the characters of the story so you can tell just how close they are to it. The story though...just doesn't seem to match up to the artwork. I had to struggle through it at times to make sense of what was going on, especially during the transitions between the scenes. It felt that some vital information was left out because they were saving it for the big second half reveal. Which might have worked if a bit more of the information was revealed earlier on (like a bit more info about the family) to not make the ending feel so...forced. It almost felt like two different books, but without something joining them together in the middle. It isn't a bad book and is worth picking up for the artwork...and perhaps a small adventure.

Very thorough history of the creation and eventual demise of a community of left-wing academics and artists, attempting to forge an alternative community.

This fast-paced mystery with a little romance was recommended to me by my mother because it's set in Philadelphia and concerns adoption.
A very odd book. Quite an amazing riff on Edgar Allen Poe's Pym book. A weird book that fascinated me when I read it. Didn't have my ears tuned at that time to the racial overtones of the book. Johnson does an over the top job of meditating on and at the same time lampooning this book, nineteenth-century and twentiety century takes on race and racism, and literary criticism in the current century. In the end too talky and preachy, too pleased with itself (though blessedly with the humor). Just didn't come together for me. But certainly much more ambitious than your average fare. (Listened to audiobook.)
4 stars – Historical/Regency Romance I’d lowered my expectations for this after hearing from several friends that the Huxtable series isn’t among Balogh’s best work, and I mainly read First Comes Marriage in order to have the background for Then Comes Seduction that I checked out from the library, since I so love a good rake story. I’m happy to report that after a somewhat slow beginning in which I almost abandoned it as a DNF, I ended up really liking this book, especially the cheerful, find joy in the everyday things and moments in life heroine. Unfortunately, I also as equally and emphatically disliked the stuffy, snobby, callous, condescending, and unappreciative hero, nor did I ever truly warm up to him, even after his fairly hasty, and rather late in coming, love realization and declaration. Still, I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it, despite that the hero might not have deserved such a whimsical, happy, optimistic, and loyal wife, so I’m rating it solid 4 stars. And I’m looking forward to reading Then Comes Seduction and more of Balogh’s (better) books. :)
I was directed to this after reading The Time Traveler's Wife, the back cover of which contained an enthusiastic quotation from someone calling it "the new The Lovely Bones...". Like a trusting fool, I immediately purchased the book and attempted to read it. Based on my distaste and the general public's enthusiastic embracing of this book, I had assumed my taste was simply off. Reading other, far more eloquent rants about why this book was simply not good has made me feel better, hence I happily banish this to the depths of my "Will never recommend to anyone" pile.
a novel that is full of shocks... there really wasn't much of a true story line in my eyes. it was worth reading at least once.
