Good but Secret Life of Bees was better AND different.

Fabulous! Amanda had mentioned this one as a favorite, so it had been in the back of my mind for awhile to read it. I am rather amazed now that I made it to age 42 without ever reading it, because I'll be promoting it to my children much sooner than that. Special meaning for me because my great-grandmother Jennie grew up in an Irish-American family in Brooklyn during the same time period.

This book is a pretty fast read and it does a good job of unmasking the religious right for what it really is. As a person of faith, I strongly recommend this book to anyone who has time since it truly separates the proverbial wheat from the chaff.

Horne writes a brilliant history of Algeria's struggle for independence. His well-documented research records how France tried to hold on to its empire, and how its traditions and institutions were betrayed by ideology and evil. More ominous are the telling parallels between this war and the current situation in the Middle East -- mutato nomine: change the names of "France" and "Algeria" to "United States" and "Iraq," and Horne's work could have been written yesterday.
Written in 1895, The Red Badge Of Courage tells the story of Henry Fleming, a young man who joins the Union army during the American Civil War. Before his first engagement he suffers great anxiety about how he will acquit himself in the heat of battle. When the moment comes he quickly becomes convinced that the Confederate Army has overwhelmed the Union troops and flees. After a period of wandering aimlessly, he joins a group of wounded men heading away from the battlefield. However, he quarrels with another soldier who hits him on the head with a rifle butt. Now that Henry has an obvious wound, he is able to rejoin his regiment and everyone assumes he sustained his injury in battle. Subsequently, he fights bravely and wins the praise of his commanding officer. I found the style of this novel very difficult to engage with. The narrator always seemed to be at one remove from his characters, describing them in a journalistic rather than a novelistic fashion. Perhaps this is explained by the fact that Crane was a journalist before turning to fiction. There is very little plot and the real substance of the book is a series of extended mediations on the chaotic reality of war and on the highly subjective notion of courage. All this is achieved through a focus on the thoughts of the protagonist, who is not a particularly articulate or self-aware individual. This naturally presents the author with a challenge but it was one that I did not feel convinced he had completely risen to. All in all I found this a disappointing read.
As many of the posters here on goodreads, I have been a Nora Roberts fan forever. So, when this book came out I didn't hesitate on purchasing it. I was not overly impressed with this book. I did not feel connected with any of the characters, I didn't think there was a strong plot or strong characters. I learned more about the restoration, the work being done, and the decorating of each room than I did on the romance between Beckett and Clare. I think this was why I never connected with the characters. I like the heat between Hope and Ryder and look forward to read their story. I think the next release is in another 6 months. Why so long between books? This is a pet peeve of mine, why is there so much time between the next release, by the time the next book comes around I almost have to read the book again to feel connected.

A fun addition to the series, this book follows Captain Arrow's adventures and happy ending. Jilly is an independent woman who manages a bookstore by herself. She is also Captain Arrow's new neighbor and the romance takes off from there. The story's light and fast paced. It has things happening besides the romance development of our two main leads and many colorful characters are added to the mix. One final Impossible Bachelor remains and according to the preview at the end of this book, he's going to Scotland! Looking forward to his story.
I picked up this cookbook at the closing sale of the Union Square Borders bookstore - mostly because it had some interesting recipes for sauces - moles, salsas and such. Reading through all the recipes - I confess I am a bit disappointed at the inclusion of some extremely basic recipes - so rudimentary as to be laughable. I can only imagine that this must be some thing that the publishing house insisted be added - for example - the author includes a recipe for a green salad (1 qt mixed greens, sliced tomatoes, avocadoes, scallions, oil, vinegar, salt, pepper). There's a "recipe" for boiled corn and for roasted corn. One recipe for mushroom filling describes in the list of ingredients "mushrooms of any edible variety" - edible? really? in a cookbook? Gracias, Capitan Obvio! Overall - there are several good basic empanada filling recipes, mole recipes (a yellow mole!) and a casserole called "San Cristobol Bread Casserole" that look fantastic. Most of the soups seem pretty basic and I'll stick to "Vegetarian Table: Mexico" for my favorite recipes there. This is not a vegan cookbook - many of the other recipes call for eggs & cheese (including cracking whole eggs into soups just before serving). Great cookbook for ideas for vegetarians of all stripes, nonetheless. And, if you didn't know how to make a green salad - you're in luck!

At first it was a quick and easy, interesting read, but I ultimately found the skipping around in time to be a bit confusing. I also realize that the author was blessed with a life full of well-known musicians, but there are times in the book where she seems to just list those people with no real purpose to the book..more like: I went to a party and here are all the famous people who were in attendance. That was a little off-putting to me. On the other hand, I really enjoyed her descriptions of June Carter Cash's relationship with her stepchildren and how June described them all as "her children"; the author's eulogy for June was elegant and seemed truly heartfelt. I hope that if I am ever asked to write a eulogy for anyone, I can write one half as moving.
