If you like Alfred Hitchcock movies, then you will like this book. It has plot twists and turns and an unexpected ending the fits perfectly within Hitchcock's style, and like his movies, one needs to suspend a bit of disbelief. Also along the Hitchcock vein you have a beautiful women somewhat at the mercy of the men around her. To give it an extra Gothic flair, it takes place in Bronte country - rugged north England - with decaying old houses and all. The brief summary at the back of the book is mis-leading, for it's not a romantic thriller, but a character and plot driven suspense. There is mild swearing throughout and reference to a clandestine affair, but nothing graphic. I am excited to discover another good author even though I'm about forty years late.

** spoiler alert ** margaret atwood has a penchant for telling a riveting tale. what i liked about the robber bride was the intermingling of real and fantasy. the characters, plot, setting were all approached so seriously, yet simultaneously there were moments when i thought i was reading a well-written script to a soap because it was that kind of dramatic. but it is a highly intelligent, complex, and intriguing sort of drama. how she structured it was impeccable. and it was just the right length. what prevented this book from being five stars though was that there was always one nagging stone left unturned. a central figure in the lives of the main characters had no credible story or motive to her name. zenia's character was purposefully bereft of substance as a result, making it difficult for the reader to truly appreciate the stories being told. what also bothered me (and i realize this is may be the point of the whole novel) was the fact that the main characters bought into zenia and her antics time and time again, strong women who let the men in their lives nearly destroy each. but the fact of the matter is that all three lived to tell the tale and all three in their own way managed to regain their dignity and hold onto a semblance of themselves when zenia did not and could not. so perhaps their initially perceived lack of strength is the true strength that saw them through the tragedies in their lives, although i will admit that towards the end there i wished i could just reach in and shake each one of them into some sort of vengeful action.

Got this one cheap on my kindle. Author tells the story of her family from the 1800s when her great grandfather immigrated here from China to work on the trans-continental railroad up through and including her present day family. I learned alot about what life is like to be Chinese in China and Chinese in America. Really interesting.

Today, as I added this book as "to-read," the average rating was... wait for it... 3.14!
A quick and easy read. Forensic Psychologist Dr. Keith Ablow adds some interesting insights into the "life story" of this severely disturbed man.

I would never ever ever have picked up this book if it weren't being given away for free, but it was, so I did. It turns out the protagonist caught my interest, and by the end I had a vested interest in her survival. That said, overall, this book is pretty formulaic. Sure, there's a supernatural theme which is unusual for your average crime-fighting-girl-warrior type novel, but honestly the magical elements weren't what kept me interested. In fact, the big scene near the end, what you might call the magical climax of the book - it made me laugh more than made me scared. I was never really worried about the outcome. I liked it though, and am considering looking fr other books about Marla Mason!

The book was good, but it could have probabbly ended about 150 pages earlier than it did. It was nice to finish the series, but I think the first book was the best out of the series. Still a good read....
