I thought I wouldn't like this book because it was too popular. Ha--I loved it. What a great writer with an interesting mind.

Not a big fan of Tolkien-style fantasy, but as this series has been so popular, thought I would check it out. I can see what has captured many readers. Interesting characters, great world-building, a fairly sophisticated exploration of good and evil and the use and misuse of those labels. My biggest gripe is the pacing, which often lumbers. In some sections, I found the narrative engrossing despite that, but in others I felt aggravated. Can't decide if I am enthusiastic enough to pick up the next book.

Maybe this would have made a better magazine article. Jesus Freak starts fairly well, but it quickly becomes repetitious, predictable, and dull. Almost every character the author mentions having met after getting involved with a San Francisco church is introduced as unusual and interesting; but there is almost nothing that ever shows the reader what made them so interesting to her. The only one who might have held our attention is the author herself, and she is very reticent on that subject -- on her past, that is. Not too reticent on her present. There seems to be a sub-genre in full bloom of politically oriented personalities whose disappointments or frustrations in life send them back to their religious roots. Then they tell us (directly, or sometimes indirectly) what tremendous Christians they are, now, and how hard it is to be them, how much effort it takes. To me, there are few subjects with more potential for excitement, discovery, reflection and speculation than Biblical studies of varying kinds -- scholarship, interpretation, even anthropology -- but this little sub-genre is not one of them. There is invariably too much self-pity, too much self-appreciation, or, often, both.

It is amazing to think of life in these terms. Is the unexamined life worth living?

I'm conflicted. I actually listened to this on audio CD, and I think that might have, at least in part, been the driving force behind actually finishing it... the narrator was excellent and nailed all of the characters. The book was well written, beautifully descriptive, etc. There were two parallel stories happening at once, which caused some initial confusion as far as story and character development. The end was mildly frustrating but still relatively unexpected, and the point at which the stories finally intertwined was definitely intriguing. The characters were *mostly* well developed, but I found one of the main characters horribly annoying and whiny as opposed to sympathetic. The premise was good but because convoluted as the story got more and more complicated. That said (and please pardon my aimless, rambling review.. it's been about six months since I read this); I did enjoy it on many levels, and cared what happened to the characters. Try it if you're feeling patient and up for something a little different.

A quiet, melancholy, sad novel shot through with feeling, but never depressing. McDermott writers with a calm assurance about love, loss, ties, obligations and bearing a burden for a lifetime.

Weird book. There were five or six different character/storylines that sometimes crossed. Ultimately, none of the questions about any of the characters are answered. Unless, like I said, I missed the big philosophical message. Which is entirely possible. Sad, scary, totally gross at some points. Really boring and wordy in others. Not recommended for people with kids!
