I enjoy this even more than the federalist papers, really interesting to anyone who cares about politics or the nature of political thought in this country. This is where it all started.

Kind of felt like he was trying to be Kafka and failing. Funny in parts, though.

What a weird little book with a meandering storyline! It's alright, I guess, but just sort of strange.

This novel made me want to cry and throw things and kill something - not because it's awful but because the story really got to me. Briony and Cecilia, two of the main characters, are sisters who are 10 years apart. Me and my sister are 9 years apart. Not that my sister would ever do what Briony did. But it makes the story hit that much closer to home. McEwan sets up this story in three acts pre-, during, and post WWII, from multiple points of view. The novel takes place over 50 years, but the three parts concentrate on small moments of time, in the psyches of the three main characters: Briony, Cecilia, and Robbie Turner. Great pay-off at the end too. Once I got to part two, I had to know the ending. So I stayed up to finish it. All's I'm saying is that the film version coming out this year had better do this book justice...

This book had both my husband and I sobbing so hard the words got blurry. It was the most moving book I have read in a long time. Just read it!

A painless book to read. I'm just not into the Zen thing. Reading this book made me realize that I never will be this type of person, I couldn't go through with the ssssssslllllllooooooooowwwwwwwww process of learning each step of something to perfection. I'm sure I'd be a better person if I could just be in this way, but I never will, just like I will never be an Astronaut or a Fireman, and that's okey dokey because the world needs anxiously high-strung neurotic people just as much as they need tranquil calm folks.

3.5 stars This is the introduction of the Belgian detective, Poirot, to the world of literature. He is engaging and amusing in his funny, fastidious ways (I kept thinking to myself "So THAT'S who they modeled "Monk" after!). And, of course, he's six steps ahead of the narrator and all other characters, as a proper mystery hero should be. This was fun, and enticed me to add other Christie novels to my "to read" queue, but, as I recall, I wasn't quite as impressed with this novel as I'd hoped to be. Part of the issue, as I recall, is that the mystery is solved partially with what I think of as "hidden clues"--clues that only the detective is aware of until the "big reveal." Since I like to puzzle out the whodunnit of a mystery novel, having corner pieces withheld until the end is slightly frustrating. But, the plot was a good one, the twists were good and twisty, the red herrings were good and fishy, and the characters were engaging and amusing. I might even read this again, at some point in the future.
