Steinbeck has the power to use words to make me walk in the muddy streets of the strikers camp, smell the beans, meat and stale coffee, and to know the faces of each of the characters in this book. Doc Burton was perfect with his probing questions and personal unresolved commitment to what is "right". My sympathy was for the workers who were being manipulated not only by the growers, but the organizers. This is a hard hitting book, but I was left hanging at the end. It is typical Steinbeck to make the reader carry on the story in their own mind, but the ending in this book left me cold.

Great non-fiction story about a woman's childhood and how she overcame her past to become who she is now. Great read. Couldn't put it down.

It took me awhile to start reading this book. Perhaps I was expecting a Steinbeck-type bleak tale of misery and poverty. But I actually quite liked this story! It is set in the Great Depression, and does a good job of setting the tone of misery and poverty. But you felt caught up in the middle of a traveling circus and freak show. Compelling and somewhat predictable, I thought it was a marvelous tale. I especially liked the nursing home sequence. What a crazy ol' coot!

Absolutley loved it. Richard Wentworth is a wealthy "playboy" by day. By night he turns into the mysterious "Spider, Master of Men". Similar to the Shadow and even more ruthless. These Pulp adventure heroes didn't mind taking the law into their own hands and killing the Villains (unlike Doc Savage who became more of a progenitor for the Super heroes). It's obvious here that the Spider (as well as the Shadow) influenced the creation of Batman. Highly recommended to all pulp adventure readers.

I listened to this - downloaded from Audible Books. The reader is unfamiliar with the Tri Cities area of Washington State and mispronounced some of the place names. Something about listening brought all the weaknesses of the book to the ear . . . .

I screamed and threw the book at I think Chapter 11? Completely amazing!
Kenny Shopsin makes the simple case for doing work well, surrounded by people you love. He doesn't get anywhere - he throws people out of his restaurant who piss him off and avoids success as much as possible - but his joy in small things like mastering the perfect pancake is profound. A funny and ultimately moving book with recipes and humor.

The main character Elli Hathaway really annoyed me, and the story did not seem to go anywhere. Pretty much every chapter was the same.

Too campy, too typical.
