I loved the unique viewpoint of this book. The character that was chosen to tell the story gave you a bird's eye view of the way a tragedy affects people. I loved this book!

I really liked the story and plot line, but the end wasn't perfect for me.

A novel I cannot read enough times. Its background history, the history it creates and how it continues to change. Intensely lyrical and moving - enjoy being swept up in the emo-tragedy of beauty, perversion and love. This edition is a bonus - see her drafts, her handwritten notes, and deduce from it what you will, what was removed from and left in the final draft.

I really enjoy reading this book. If you have an open mind and would like a refreshing perspective on how you see your work and your relation with people on a day to day basis, it's a great book for you.

I really wanted to be able to give this graphic novel 5 stars but the art was just too inconsistent. At times the art was really good and other times it looked like the artist was actually trying to make everyone ugly. The story was great though and it was interesting to see that Cap remembered Wolverine from WW2 in this Universe too.

Published: 1978, Harper Trophy Age: 10 and up 11 year old Galadriel (Gilly) is a tough and brilliant little girl who has been passed around in foster homes all her life. Her new foster home is with the Trotter’s, the strangest family of all; “a fat lady, a retarded 7 year old boy, and a blind old black man.” She dreams of her tall and beautiful mother coming to rescue her. Gilly is a very angry, brash, mean girl who does a lot of bad things. But, through the kindness of the people around her she grows to love and respect them. She must learn some hard lessons about life including the fact that her mother isn't what she thinks she is. The story has an emotional ending and the reader will come to like and understand Gilly. Paterson deals with the sensitive subject of being a foster child in a humorous, insightful, reflective way that will keep readers absorbed. Questions on foster children and the system might follow and be a good discussion while reading this book.
This is one of the most disturbing books I've ever read. It is enough to make anyone think twice about having kids. At first I was turned off by Shriver's writing style. She uses 5 dollar words when 10 cent words would work just fine. The main problem is that I don't believe Eva would actually speak the way Shriver claims she does. This is a minor complaint and you forget about it after the first 100 pages. This book deeply effected me. The pain and suffering is almost too much to bear and makes me wonder just how much people can take. Of course the most obvious question you'll be asking yourself as you read this is the classic nature vs. nurture. For the first half of the book, I didn't like Eva. But the more we get to know her, the more I understand her decisions and motivations. I can definitely recommend this book but I warn you, it will stay with you long after you put it down.

This is definitely the best book by Palahniuk that I have read, although my list is only comprised of three. It is also the first one I read, which leads me to wonder if that is why I like it the most. His novels are all similarly dark, and mostly hopeless...in other words, they have no happy endings.
