hard to describe in just a few words. If you can make some sense of it while you're reading, it will blow your freaking mind. Budget six weeks or so of daily reads. One of my top two or three books of all time.

great detail of a huge event in history that reads like a novel

A good book. But I am biased against it as I strongly disagree with Ayn Rand's world view. It deserves a high 3, not quite a 4. She uses the story as a vehicle for her philosophy about great men, genius, competition, and capitalism.

I love the early stories about baseball, both from the formative years and in the 20s through 50s...the iconic nature of the heroes, such as Walter Johnson. As a Washington Senators fan, this book had many great things about the team. The central figure, of course, is Walter Johnson. He was certainly one of the two or three best right handed pitchers of all time. He was also one of the most beloved figures in baseball, clearly friends with all players, including Babe Ruth and Ty Cobb...not an easy duo to befriend. for those not infatuated with Senators baseball, the stories about the 1924 World Series is still one for the ages...clearly one of the most dramatic series ever contested.

I think this is written for “young-adults” but it was surprisingly engrossing. An easy, but also entertaining read!

Cate Kennedy writes about the darker aspects of life: her characters wrestle with inner demons. They aren't bad people: they are ordinary people caught in bad, trying, or desperate circumstances. As a result of Kennedy's skill as a storyteller, we find ourselves sympathizing (or at least empathizing) with characters who sometimes act in morally questionable ways. The subject matter may be dark at times, but the writing is fun and fresh. My only quibble: the e-book edition could use a re-edit. I spotted numerous punctuation errors and a few typos.

I found this book while packing to move out of my comfortable apartment and embark on a rather confused (and possibly short-lived) attempt to change the world/become a writer. I bought it a year ago but never got around to reading it, which I think is good, because last night was the perfect time for me to read it. I'm just going to embrace the cliche now, and say that this was the book I needed to read, and that I am going to carry it with me for the next two to six months, rereading and underlining passages and carrying Rilke's words around in a folded leather wallet inside my chest, for inspiration, and comfort.
An amazing look into everything in life. I need to read this again it is so awesome.

Another one of those classics I got all the way through high school and college without reading ... I love the relationship between Huck and Jim. I love how Huck discovers that Jim is a 'real person' - he has feelings, he is intelligent, he misses his family. I found the assumption that Jim, as a black slave, was not quite human disturbing, but not offensive. It's a period novel. The language and attitude were appropriate with Huck's education and background. At the time it was written, Mark Twain was probably pretty progressive in acknowledging Jim's intelligence and feelings. I've never read The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, which is probably a good thing because in the parts of this book that include Tom, he annoys me to no end. Huck is such an intelligent kid and I can't believe he goes along with Tom's ridiculous schemes.
