You don't have to be a Stephen King fan to enjoy The Stand. You do have to have a lot of time. I read the unabridged version and it was a great read. Tons of interesting characters, lots of plot twists and turns, plenty of gore. It also took me weeks to read this (and I'm a fast reader). On the up side, it will tone your arms while you read as just holding it up is exercise.

In order to understand this book, you might want to do a little research. This book takes place in Iran during the Revolution after the Shah was thorown out. If you don't know what I'm talking about, then you'll get lost on the first page. You have to know what events were taking place in Iran like the war and why it's happening to get into the book. The author tell stories based on one event at a time to get all the details. The stories are told from the author's point of view but as a child. I like that beacause the little girl focuses mainly on her family and how everything affected her. Some stories tell you how they still tried to enjoy life and others tell you how badly things were getting. You'll really get into the book if you know what they're talking about the whole time. If you really enjoyed it, there's a second book to it to know more about what happens in Marji's life.
