A twist I wasn't expecting, I really enjoyed seeing the unique world Carey has created through a man's eyes. I also enjoyed the new perspective of not only a traitor's son, but from a man decended from a different part of the world in the novel. Another book I could not put down with many unexpected twists.

I didn't like it as much as the first one. It didn't really suck me in until the last 100 or so pages. Only because I have to know what's up with Annah will I read the next one. Huge disappointment considering how much I fell in love with The Forest of Hands and Teeth.

★ ★ ★ ★ ½ Deep breath in....deep breath out...., that was soooo good! Quick-cap: The first installment in the Mercy Thompson series introduces us to Mercedes, a coyote-shifter, mechanic living in the Tri-Cities, WA. Through an act of kindness to a newly fledged wolf-shifter teen, she is exposed to danger within the world of werewolves. Her past ties as a foster child in the pack lead by the Alpha of North America, and her current ties as the next-door neighbor of the Tri-Cities Alpha, make it inevitable that she is then swept into the clash/mystery that follows. Old romances and new potential ones are kindled without overpowering the story and making it feel like a romance novel. We are also given a bit of foreshadowing in regard to Mercy's 'power-level' in the food chain potentially being on the rise. Many new story paths were set up in this first book. A strong series opening overall. Briggs does a wonderful job introducing us to the variety of characters in her world. This book deftly joins together the current plot with the introductions and 'flashbacks' needed to pull all the characters of Mercy's past into the present without endless backstory. We also get a quick but satisfying peek at the diverse group of paranormal peeps that she calls friend. No character felt completely contrived and although there were one or two that weren't visited as much as I would like, it didn't detract from the story. Her relationships with multiple areas of the 'paranormal' world give us glimpses of future turns for the main series plot-line. The only element that kept me from awarding the fifth star was the weakness of Mercy's 'revelations'. For me, they never really felt like the character was having an "Ohhh!" moment, but instead as if they were thrown in as dialogue to keep the reader informed. This book has received fabulous reviews from many sources whose opinion I value, and man...were they right. Well done Ms. Briggs! You have another fan to add to your list.

I got off to a slow start with this book. The main character was hard for me to feel 'connected' with. I couldn't relate to or understand her compulsion to keep buying things to make herself feel better. But as her heart was softened and she began to grow closer to God, I really began to love her! Here's the paragraph that really hit me: "And when I cut away the rot from a case of oozing tomatoes that came from only heaven knows where, I experienced euphoria like I'd never known. I knew that at that moment I was doing the holy will of God. I was exactly where I was supposed to be; it was holy and good and just. Merciful--to me, the chief of sinners--and humbling. I shouldn't have been privy to such blessing, such favor from God as to serve right there, right then. He called me out to do this, and I deserved non of it. I could have been in my house at this moment, sitting on my plush couch with a cup of warm tea, a Bible in my lap, and a study book beside me begging God to make me whole while doing none of His dirty work. But no. I cut rot off tomatoes in a roach-infested kitchen off North Avenue." This author definitely challenges my comfort zone.....but in a good way. For me, I need to be reminded that I am to be living out my faith and my love for God. It's not just about studying the Bible, but about applying it!

I don't think I have ever said this about a book, but the movie was so much better.

Good, middle was the best though.
This is a collection of short stories, and I found myself stopping after each story to give myself the opportunity to think about the characters before moving on to the next one. The writer reminds me a bit of Murikami because the characters are slightly detached from their lives, and when they talk about themselves it's almost as if they are describing scenes that are unfolding before them rather than scenes they participate in. Even in translation, it's beautifully written. I will be reading more by this author.
The beginning of a great series, Christian novel about the struggles of a family and their abilities to move beyond their trials
