Very good. Loved the summary of history of capitalism. This is what all people should learn in high school. The part about wealth creation on the capital markets (determining I by knowing R and ROI for similar risk projects) and how that's different than savings or income~skills. Also the difference for the Fed between a checking account (or demand deposit) and a savings account (certain measures of money supply (M1 M2, etc) count checking and not savings). It was written in 1994 so they talk about stuff that today we aren't worried about. Inflation (we mostly know how to deal with). Fears of Germany and Japan leaving us behind (we have past both up again on productivity). How Japan has a wonderful synergy between government and business (w/ the 90s as a 'lost' decade for Japan and its banks we know the two shouldn't get in bed too much).

This is an incredible manga series (and, for that matter, anime - although for the anime, I'd really recommend the fansubs, as the English release is agonizingly bad). And the thing is, it shouldn't be this good. It's about a bunch of Go-obsessed people. Who talk about Go. And play Go. And argue about Go. And yet it's the most compelling, involving, and fun manga I've ever read. Partly, this is because of the characters - Shindou Hikaru, Touya Akira, and Fujiwara-no-Sai are realistic and interesting, and the relationship between Shindou and Touya is, well, very slashy, if you're me. But it's entrancing whether you read it that way or not. The secondary characters are likewise engaging. And the artwork is incredible, especially in the later volumes. And it has no typical manga elements. There are no battles, just shouting matches over Go games (and refusal to play Go games, and playing Go games with the wrong people or in the wrong way). No one levels up, although they certainly get better at Go. The only really typical manga element is the destined rivalry, and it's between guys playing Go, not ninjas or whatever. Oh, I'm doing this badly. And that's because I really can't communicate the joy of Hikaru no Go in words. But it's fabulous all the same, and I recommend it to anyone and everyone.

I couldn't put this book down. It's a great novel that really gives one some perspective about Afghanistan and what has happened to that country. The author did a wonderful job portraying one boy's childhood in Afghanistan and his adulthood in America. Wonderfully written and definitely worth reading.

Not worth the trouble. At first glance this book seemed interesting however pretty soon into it you realize that the whole purpose seemed to be that the author (a drug addict and con who modeled the main character after himself) just wanted a place to rant about how "pure" junkies are and corrupt the police are. Yes it seems to be a look from the inside and has a fresh voice however it isn't well written, nor is it particularly engaging. I was given this book to read by a friend and after reading it had to look at her and ask, "why?" The plot is predictable and the characters are black-and-white with very simple dialogue. All in all it was a waste of time. Enough said.

I read this while I was at L'Abri. There are some really great thoughts on prayer.

To me, this book was mainly about mothers, mistakes, and love. I loved reading it and especially liked the line, "you can always tell a motherless child by the looks of her hair".

Given the generally high marks this book has received (mostly from the contributors and their acquaintances I see), I figured it safe betting that this collection would be an enjoyable read. Toe Tags doesn't feel like it even made it past a quick cursory glance from its proofreader. With stories switching from past to present tense with no reason other than the author's sloppy oversight, to (somewhat baffling) spates of a clear inability to distinguish between "than" and "then", this book is riddled with Grammar and Punctuation 101-level mistakes. I had the strong impression that very few if any of the authors were asked to make revisions beyond their first drafts. Needless to say, it made for a lot of distractions while reading. The stories themselves, while for the most part unique at their core, are neither frightening nor very enjoyable. That's not to say there aren't a couple of good stories in the collection. However, there seems to be both a lack of story development and general writing style from the large majority of these tales, and the overall work suffers for it. I often found myself bored as I read through this book, which to my mind read like a high school writing project slung together by a band of friends rather than an anthology of new and talented horror authors. On more than one occasion I wondered how a good chunk of these poorly written and cliche-abused stories were approved for publication at all. I had higher expectations, and Toe Tags is definitely not one of the best horror anthologies out there.

Very easy to read. It would have been better if the book was much longer and explored each of the characters more. There are a ton of women featured in this book and I felt that some of their stories were so quick and convenient.

This is an extremely refreshing book on the call and work of pastor in the local church. "Refreshing" is an interesting word to use since the book was written a few hundred years ago by a Puritan pastor, but it is very much needed in relevent for today's pastoral leadership. The Puritans had a way of discipling and preaching that disregards the 'fluff' found in most churches today. For example, he discusses how he would visit each of the members of his church and challenge them on their doctrinal positions and teach them. WOW, is this even considered in most church's today. Let's get back to "watching our life and doctrine." (Timothy)
