The author truly captures the emotional ties between a parent and child - one of love and survival.

It bothers me that I didn't really care for this book, because I seem to remember that I LOVED Kincaid's book, As Hot As It Was You Ought to Thank Me. But I don't really even remember that book, so it doesn't matter. This one...was kind of like reading a grown-up version of "See Spot Run." The author didn't really tell a story so much as simply describe what the characters were doing. Early on, it didn't bother me too much, but the middle of the book was a huge drag -- made worse by Kincaid's awkward attempt to write dialogue in Ebonics for Arnold and every other African-American character. By the end, I just wanted to be finished and was kind of annoyed that I hadn't jumped ship.

I feel let down and ultimately disapointed. The book started out so well and I really thought this was going to be 5 star rating but it just didn't deliver. The ending is where it all went down hill, the last chapter of the book (which I am not going to spoil). My fist thought after I finished the last page was, is this it? The end of the story? I didn't feel closure and felt the ending was rushed. If Maggie was on my Facebook list I would write to her and say: Magiie dear, go back and re-write the last chapter OR add a few because THIS ending is not good enough.

Parts of this book were truly outstanding and extremely controversial. The relationship between abortions and lower crime rates doesn't exactly thrill the pro-lifers out there and I started some very serious "discussions" regarding the relationship between baby safety and car seats, the ability of a name to sink your life, etc. The author challenges its reader to think beyond the traditional cause and effect relationships that we have held as doctrine. Another good resource from this book is Project Implicit, the Harvard online test that will assess if you harbor secret prejudices. With that said, other parts of this book were a little flat. Sometimes, it would have been helpful to have actually seen some of the scientific background that went into the assertions.
love this. kind of wordy at times and very existential but delightful

I LOVED how Rowling ended the series. This may quite possibly be my favorite in the series. I won't give anything away because I'm not a jerkface like that, but suffice it to say that the pace was different, the characters really developed, and all the important loose ends were tied up.

Not what I was expecting. Didn't enjoy it at much as I was expecting to.

Filled with delicious abandoned or odd words, like CROTCHET: noun A peculiar and whimsical perversion; a nonsensical notion CUCKQUEAN: noun A female cuckold GOZZARD: noun A goose herder QUIDDLE: verb To fiddle or diddle idly Actually, a number of the odd words in Gene Wolfe's Book of the New Sun (Wolfe claims there's no made-up words in it) can be found here, which is why I got it originally.
