I really liked this book. I found it on a website that had a list of hundreds of free ebooks. I fell in love with this story and the characters. It is more like one of the books that was written in the 80's, early 90's. My favorite type, the old bodice rippers. 2/29/12 I bought this book in print form, paid a fortune for it 20.00 from Claywords but I wanted it in my collectable keeper shelf.

This is a great book but I almost put it down because of the gruesome descriptions of rape and murder. War is not pretty and the picture that was painted is filled with horror but there are many shinning moments. You will never find braver men who by the way were very young. I admire them so much after reading this. I think this is the great accomplishment of this book.

I have no gripes with the content, or even how its written. I was just really bored by this book. For many people this book is, for some reason, enthralling. I won't say not to read it, but if you start to fall asleep within the first 50 pages, just stop. Go read the sparknotes on it and save yourself the trouble. If you like the first 50, and G-D knows why you would, just keep going. You'll like the rest.

This is a fun book to read/listen to on a rainy day. You flip through several pages while the announcers original play by play is going. Bob Costas does a great job helping you visualize by setting the scene. Not for someone with kids that like to continuously interrupt.
** spoiler alert ** What I didn't know when I started the book was that it was book 1 of 3. I wish I had. The first part of the book was awesomely paced. It was fast and hard to put down. I'd say the first third. After that I think he fired his editor and it showed. The book had long sections that weren't hard to put down at all. I don't want to use the word "slogged" but it certainly slowed down. It could have used some tightening up. Whole sections could have been cut out without impacting how I felt about the plot, storyline, or characters. Hell, whole characters could have been cut out since they seem to have only been introduced to kill them off later. I sound like I didn't enjoy the book but I did. There were some good ideas in there, sort of The Stand meets Salem's Lot as written by Robert Jordan (That's the not compliment part. I'm not a fan of Robert Jordan. I think he's too wordy. He can say in 100 words what most writers would say in 20.) I recommend it, but don't go into it expecting a lot of resolution. This book is definitely the setup for future books and it feels like a cheat sort of by not really ending. Speaking of cheating several times in the book the author cheats by having characters have something happen to them and then the camera pulls away so we don't see what happens next and then later TA DA! They are saved (or not) but we never really clearly find out what happens. There's lots of amnesia or shock induced forgetfulness. That's OK once in a while... but when it happens every time he writes himself into a corner and he wants to drum up tension it's just annoying. Again... I know this sounds like I'm saying I didn't like the book. I REALLY REALLY liked the first bit, but the part after that I just liked. I did care enough about the characters and the story to keep going and see what happened next. So it held my interest and kept me going... it just didn't really stand alone like I'd hoped it would. I think novels should stand alone, even if they're part of a series. Otherwise it's not the first part of a series as much as it is an incomplete book. With some tightening up it would have been a faster paced book and maybe I'd have liked it more. but the slow bits really took me out of it, especially since they contrasted so starkly with the beginning of the book. Final Answer? Read it but do so knowing that part 2 will be where more questions are answered, hopefully, and do so knowing that the author cheats a lot and we'll all hope he isn't as lazy in the second book and realizes that it doesn't build tension so much as it looks lazy, like a day-time soap opera stunt when the long lost person shows up as an amnesiac and everybody just goes along with it.

I really did enjoy this book. The science, medicine and historical references were easy to understand. It was a great story- did not want to put it down and also did not want it to end.
Awesome novel, Hornby writes the best inner monologues period.
