I’ve read more John Updike than I can remember, mostly because the plot goes in one eye and out the other. I read Updike because the man uses words like Buddy Guy uses a guitar or Einstein uses a differential equation. He writes sentences that convey thoughts we mere mortals couldn’t get across in a chapter. This collection of short stories, mostly concerning the ordinary dramas of the modern New England upper-middle class, shows off his talent best, I think.

THis is a book for teenagers but I love the author so I thought I would try it. I had never really been a Christian trying to go to high school. We stopped attending church while I was still in elementary school. This girl had a tough go with her parents trying to protect her from the world. I know that every parent wants to protect their child and finding a balance is hard. THe mother made all the girls clothes and had strick rules for everything including meeting boys. The girl wanted so bad to go to her senior prom and her parents had rules on that. I thought of the book for my step daughter.

This is the second book by Egan that had a great topic and was a disappointment, I got bored - I am sure that the people in the dust bowl did too - with storm after storm and descriptions of how things were the worst they could be but then they got worse yet. I found a few things of interest -such as the photographic project to document the dust bowl conditions. I wonder if another author could bring this more to life and present things in a better way.

About a quarter of the book leaves you inspired, yet the rest is pretty depressing. Still a good read though.

Eh, shoddy science at best. Interesting, but his lack of alternate explanations is making me crazy.

Best of the series so far? A few questions answered, more seeds planted for the future.

The Women of the Hill took me by surprise. More a novelette than a full length novel, it's packed full of personality and energy. Within the setting of a close-knit circle of friends, realistically drawn with razor-sharp, true to life dialogue, a plot is woven of African-American women struggling to survive economically and raise their children in the face of marriages and relationships gone wrong. The ending was so surprising and shocking that I was literally biting my nails as I whipped through the pages. Ey Wade knows how to portray real characters and tell a story with equal parts humor and pathos...a story that never loses its punch.

I really enjoyed this book, although at times it was incredibly gruesome and sad. Illustrates the power of education and the importance of community.
