Grab your chair and hang on for a Good Read packed full of adventure and lessons on life. This is a true life novel written in the author’s maternal grandmother's voice. Lily was a woman of independence and spunk. She broke and raced horses, taught school, bootlegged, learned to fly a plane all while getting an education and being a wife and mother. Every disappointment, start over, good and bad times had a life lesson in it. I hope to face life's challenges with as much courage and strength! She was not a perfect women, she made mistakes, poor choices, and tried to do better. This would be a Great Book Club read!

This book was enough to make my blood boil. How things like this could happen in our "enlightened" world is beyond me. And the way they throw money around... I found myself shaking my head in disbelief often.

I enjoyed this book; it's in a similar vein to Andrea Barrett's wonderful novels, in that it combines 18th-century science and real historical characters with fiction. It's essentially two parallel tales -- the story of naturalist Joseph Banks and his mysterious lover Miss B, and modern-day taxidermist Fitz and his lodger Katya -- linked by a mysterious missing stuffed bird. [return][return]The problem I had with it was that the 18th-century parts were much more compelling than the 20th century ones; I loved the way he'd used real historical evidence to construct a plausible story about Banks and his nameless lover, and the development of their story was touching. The modern characters never really came alive in the same way -- they were all a bit wooden -- and the "mystery" of the bird and the various people looking for it never really built up enough suspense to be thrilling; it was pretty obvious that eventually Fitz would find it, and I guessed the "twist" in the d

Amazingly well written. Wonderfully descriptive dialog. Characters much more complex than in the film. As part of the story, the history simply comes alive. An excellent read, albeit a long one!

This book is pretty good. High school life is brought to life, with some magic in it. It's very cool, actually. This book is revolved around high school, but sneaking out with a purpose, instead of an excuse. Very fasinating, actually. I suggest for anyone (above 10) to read and love. ☺
Read this again recently. Yes, it starts slowly, but it's the ultimate classic fantasy series. If you somehow haven't read it yet you need to.

If you've ever Googled an ex's name, read a romantic rival's blog, or counted carpal tunnel syndrome as one the downsides of your relationship, then you have been a victim of modern love. Read this book, and recognize that you are not alone. Modern Love is a fitting monument to relationships in the new millennium. Fifty succinct tales, quick reads that require minimal commitment but with the potential to provide maximum satisfaction, this collection contains essays culled from the pages of the New York Times column by the same name. Following the course of a relationship from first glance to last kiss and everything in between, Modern Love seeks to capture the ancient mysteries of the heart, but with a contemporary twist. Online dating. Text message break-ups. Polyamorous trapeze acts. Raising a family in the digital age. The contributors of Modern Love don't hold anything back, as if the only thing that could redeem and honor their romantic follies is a thorough examination. Every story is not a winner and some tales are simply hit or miss, but all of them are short enough that rushing through a dud is painless enough. If only the same could be said for bad boyfriends — but then again, the worst breakups often make the best stories, and love in this modern age is no exception.

Dana Hathaway is sixteen year girl living with her embarassing and alcoholic mother in the US. Fed up of embarassment, lies and having to be responsible for her mother, she travels to the magical country of Avalon in source of her father and responsibility freedom. Her trip goes unplanned and as with the illustrious tale that Jenna Black has weaved we see the life of Dana begin to unravel in ways we had not imagined. This story is brilliantly written with Jenna Black creating a wonderous and original faerie world. I absolutely loved the unpredictability that this story offers, never leaving you certain of what is going to happen next, but absolutley absorbed in the inner and outer conflict that occurs to Dana. I thoroughly loved this book! It was like a breath of fresh air against the common fairy book cliches. I loved her develpoed characters and already became interested in Dana's love interests and also simply the creative and imaginative land of Avalon that is so new and inviting to read about. I would recommend this book to all who love faerie books and well develpoed characters :)) Happy Reading it!!
