If you like YA (KATE. I'm looking at you) this trilogy is going to change your entire perception of the genre. I fool you not, you will finish the entire trilogy in five days. If not, you have no soul. I'm not equivocating here. Best books I read in 2006.

Book 2 in this comedy/mystery series about a family of private investigators. The characters are quirky--which I like, but the mystery part is only so-so.

This woman is my rock star. Deceptively simple stories--she's easy to write off as fluff until you actually read her. The most accurate representation of Southern culture I have ever seen, as well as the best insight into the life of an intellectual in an anti-intellectual society.
in the beginning she is helping her mom work, and with the constant drought her family lost all of their money. Her dad decides to sell her to her supposed aunt who is really going to sell her another man. That same man takes her to the Happy House where it is a life or death situation.

Started off as enjoyable read, but ended on a rather unredeemable note; it is a kind of "The Taming of the Shrew" in children's form. Caddie Woodlawn turns into Elsie Dinsmore :( Really cute book cover though.

A wonderful book. Wanted to catch the next plane to Guernsey!
For maybe the first Quarter/Third of the book you can really see the Tolkien influence, Dark riders on black horses, a gang of friends set out accompanied by a witch (Ok so no wizard) and go out on an adventure to save the world from evil. After it gets into it's stride however, it really becomes it's own book. Not perfect, but I will happily read the rest of the entire series. May take some time though....

Interesting book. Set in the not too distant future, next Sunday A.D. Japan is run by a fascist government. Dictating everyday life to a minor degree, however once per year "The Program" is run. Through flashbacks you gain the participants' insight into what it is. One junior high school class (Forty-two students. Significant number? Sarcasm? I'm not familiar enough with the Japanese school system to comment reliably.) is forced to kill each other off. Lord of the Flies crossed with Survivor, but with a MAC-10. And let's be honest, what DOESN'T get better with a MAC-10? If Voltron had a MAC-10 instead of his blazing sword, he could wack Robeasts at a distance. But I digress. It's translated from Japanese, and suffers mightily from anime-esque dialogue. Randomly chosen example from Page 57: "Impulsive actions are strictly prohibited. That means whispering will not be permitted. It's hard on me but if you whisper, I'll toss another knife at you!" It's a decent story. Watching the kids responses to the violence is telling- and probably reasonably accurate. The aforementioned flashbacks detract a lot from the flow, as the author tries to craft a uniquely enduring lifestory for each of these plucky students. Realistically, you won't care about most of em. Typically, it's chock full of childish banter about stupid crap, like crushes. Not the best commentary on violence ever written, but at least he takes a fresh angle. Published initially in 1999, I think he foretells the rise of reality TV, blended with a little Running Man. Oh, and Stephen King thinks it is "an insanely entertaining pulp riff." Says so on the cover.
Is it just me or are there a lot of books out currently about hiding letters from people and then having that turn out to suck? Guys, don't lie to protect people. It's just going to end up making them vomit later, or follow strange men into beach cottages.
The difference between The Big Sleep and The Long Goodbye is striking, not only for the marked maturity of the writing, but for the real sense that Marlowe is also almost 15 years older, tho in the book, he's only four years older. He's sadder and a little bit meaner, but also more at peace with himself as someone who does what he does because that's what he should be doing, which is ultimately self-defeating. And yet.
