A great first novel, a wonderful blend of Patrick O'Brian-style Napoleonic warfare with fantastical dragons. But what really makes this work is the personalities of former British Navy captain, now dragonrider Laurence, and his dragon Temeraire. A very enjoyable read.

Great story and really compelling beginning, but the author lost focus somewhere along the way. What truly could have been a phenomenal biography turned into an account of lots of other people's actions mixed in with what 'the mole' was doing. Back story gave way to filler in more than one instance. Still though it was the best account I have read about the inadequacy of the intelligence community and a memorizing account of modern day espionage. Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?

Fun, light read. And yes, even I could laugh at her observations of how she felt during her husband's affair. Glad she ended up walking out on the louse, just wish she had hit him with more than a pie.

For about 90% of this book, I really didn't like Olive. A retired schoolteacher, Olive is cold, distant, critical, and sometimes downright cruel. What's strange is that Olive seems to be at her best when her neighbors are in need. Seemingly without knowing it, Olive seems to know just what to say and do when someone is in crisis. The novel is a series of short stories, each one focused on a character from a small town in Maine who has somehow encountered Olive in their life. While the book tended to drag a bit at the beginning and its definitely not an uplifting read, the author is a master at creating flawed, realistic characters that show the best and worst of human nature.
