recommended highly for spiteful lonely boys with masochistic tendencies longing for mother russia and looking for the external world to justify their misplaced liberty of spirit. lovely language. terrible ending.

Fun historical fiction about Cicero's rise to power. While there were clear protagonists and antagonists, the characters were ambiguous enought to keep the book interesting even when teh plot was, at times, a bit slow for me.

Is it bad to admit that my favorite thing about this book is the copyright page?

The early pages present a hyperbolized childhood and adolescence, I was certain I was reading the next Augusten Burroughs or James Frye. I'm still not convinced Hamilton doesn't either mispresent or misremember her abondonment by both parents followed by out of control teen years in NYC. The book does finally settle into a story of self sacrifice, discovery and success. Hamilton makes compelling obversations about work, commitment, love, family, sexuality. At the end of the day I really, really liked the last two thirds of this book.

Observing and, in the way a reader is able, participating in the movement of Zach's mind through language and thought and feeling is a remarkable experience.

Based on primary research, this is a collection of anecdotes about Jewish teenagers fleeing the Nazis before and during WWII. While the experiences vary, from those who acquired visas and travel papers and emigrated from Europe to those who were actually rounded up and escaped from trains headed for the death camps, they combine to show the frightening reality for teens who had to escape in order to survive. While the experiences included in the book are certainly moving, the actual presentation was somewhat lacking. Sometimes the transitions from story to story didn't flow well, and there were a few times when a story wasn't completed satisfactorily (such as a girl who had a premonition to run away--did that premonition save her life? Did something happen after she left? The reader never finds out.) The format of the book is good, with photos and maps, and, as I said, the stories themselves are compelling, but I wish the book had been put through a more rigorous editing process.

If Ms. O'Faolain would stop name-dropping for a minute and talk about her actual life, I have no doubt this could be a readable tale. However, she seems to define her life by whom she knows, whom she hung out with back in the day, and long lists of literary works and authors she is familiar with. Now, I don't know a whole lot about Irish and English writers of the 19th and 20th centuries, and maybe if I did, I'd care more about what Ms. O'Faolain has to say about them, but I stopped reading this at Chapter 9. Semi-redeeming qualities: the author seems quite candid about her experiences, and especially her failings as a young person. She is not trying to gloss over things or paint herself in a better light. She looks back on herself from a feminist perspective and discourses on how women were just becoming able to have prospects for a life besides getting married and popping out a bunch of kids.
