Frog & Toad are Friends is a book that saved the sanity of a little boy I knew who was removed from his mom's care because she was an active alcohlic. He clung to the Frog & Toad books, and at six years old, learned again to read and write. He remembered Frog & Toad Are Friends, and had some continuity. now he is grown, and his Frog & Toad Books live with me.

Excellent book. Learned a lot not only about Jefferson himself but also the American Revolution and the period thereafter up until his death. Sadly, it seems that we've learned little and progressed hardly at all with respect to government and politics. We seem to be engaging in the same essential arguments today as did the parties of Jefferson and Adams in the post revolutionary era. The only issue I had was the author's dismissal of a sexual relationship between Jefferson and Sally Hemmings. Of course I have the perspective of a African-American and the benefit of Dr. Eugene Foster's genetic study which was published in a 1998 issue of Nature about a year after this book was published and likely longer after Ellis finished his research. Ellis did an admirable job tackling Jefferson's hypocrisy with regard to slavery. He shows this as yet another facet of Jefferson's mental makeup, his ability to shield himself from the gritty reality of situations. Of course, there is no doubt Jefferson was a brilliant man. However, he did have the sad tendency to delude himself about some things, as well as a propensity to focus only on the ideal at the expense of the practical or pragmatic. This book is well worth the read.

I read this book for my "YA of the 80's & 90's" challenge. I vividly remember reading this series in school, and not only do I remember reading the series, but I found a few penpals through the books as well. It's hysterical to read the book now as an adult, and there definitely some things I wanted to nickpick about the book (for example, all of the friends were so supportive & understanding off one of the girls when she decided to lie. 13 year old girls are not known to be understanding of anyone!) But the charm of the book just shines through, and I admit to laughing out loud, literally, on more than one occasion & sharing bits of the book with my coworkers (of my age group) who I knew would enjoy the flashbacks (for example, one of the characters dresses up as She-Ra for a costume party). This is a must read!

Kinda thought this book would be magical after the first chapter but turned into a very average romance novel read.
meaghan, bryce says you should read this.
I really liked this book! The ethical questions it brings up reminded me of two books I read recently: "Oryx and Crake" and "My Sister's Keeper" (both for different reasons as the books are markedly different). POSSIBLE SPOILER ALERT: I wasn't sure how I felt about the ending, because I so wanted them to take a leap in a different direction!

Ah, Scarlet. A great twist on the Robin Hood legend. You know them well, I’m sure. Robin Hood, Friar Tuck, Little John, Will Scarlet, Maid Marian. In truth, I’ve never read a Robin Hood story; I’ve only seen the movies: Disney, Costner, Men in Tights, etc. So I don’t think I really got to know the characters in depth. Ms. Gaughen introduced me to her characters, and I call them hers, because that is what she made them. She let me get to know them in depth. Rob, once a Lord, all cruelly and diabolically taken from him while he fought in the crusades, now fights for his people who starve under the rule of Prince John. John Little, big brother and the muscle of the band, acts the womanizer, but has eyes for only one. He’s always there at the right place, at the right time to help out in times of trouble. Kind, sweet, one-handed Much. Though he’s at a disadvantage, he doesn’t let it stop him from fighting the good fight and helping those in need. And Will, I mean, Scarlet. Small but tough, doesn’t take crap from anyone, sometimes to a fault. She’s and emotional wreck, vacillating between anger, frustration, resentment, and ardor. These characters are brave, strong willed and have become a family who would die for their neighbors and each other. Obviously the story revolves around Scarlet, a raw and deeply scarred thief with a penchant for knives, and a past she keeps to herself. Robin’s band of course, steals from the rich and gives to the poor, who have been decimated and broken by the taxes implemented by Prince John and the cruelty shown them by the Sheriff of Nottinghamshire. The Sheriff, tired of Robin and his band of thieves, hires a thief taker to rid of them once and for all. Unfortunately for Scarlet, this thief taker causes her past to catch up with her, and she must finally confide in her band to save their lives and the whole of Nottinghamshire. Aside from drawing the characters so well, Ms. Gaughen has also created a vivid landscape for us in Sherwood Forest and Nottinghamshire. The trees, the cottages, Friar Tuck’s place, the cave, are all described in such a way that I became immersed in the story, almost like I was alongside the characters, part of the band, looting, sitting by the fire, and swinging through the trees. A.C. must have done some serious research into the Robin Hood stories, the culture of the time, and the dialects. I love Scarlet’s voice. It’s original and authentic. I felt such a range of emotions reading this book. I wanted to cry when Scarlet spoke of her past, when the Sheriffs men shattered the lives of the townspeople. I wanted to laugh when John acted the bafoon. I cheered during the battles and fights, and I actually wanted to punch things a few times. This book truly has it all, comedy, adventure, and romance. If you’re a fan of any of that, if you love the Robin Hood legend, or love a story with a strong heroine, you should pick up this book. Now. Go.
