Eragon is the first book in The Inheritance Cycle, and I reread it in anticipation of the final book coming out in November 2011. I found this to be an enjoyable epic fantasy despite some clichéd story lines such as the human/elf/dwarf races, young boy growing up to become the hero, a group of rebels fighting against the tyranny of an evil king, a mysterious prophecy of the hero's future, etc. There is even a hint of romance that will be explored later in the series. This story centers around Eragon, a 15-year-old boy, and as the cover suggests, a blue dragon. Since this is the first book in what is now a four-volume cycle, there was a lot of time in training where both Eragon and the reader learn about how to use magic, the history of the Riders (humans and elves who form a bond with dragons), and the background on the two warring factions. I think Eragon is a good young adult read free of bad language and sexual scenes. It is a story where a young man must face the harsh realities of evil, take a stand, and serve the common good even at the risk of death.

Review Whitechapel Gods Whitechapel Gods by S. M. Peters is the first steampunk book I have read. Peters paints a world where the sun never penetrates the smog, and the villains never seem to die. There are two gods that rule the closed off world of Whitechapel, Grandfather Clock and Mama Engine. Grandfather clock is all about things working in harmony. Mama Engine is all about desires. The main characters are trying to put the control of Whitechapel back into the hands of men, battling monsters beyond imagination. These monsters are men who have by turning to worship the two gods are transformed into part man part machines, with oil and blood in their veins. The followers of Mama Engine have furnaces burning inside, while Grandfather Clocks' have steel and steam. There is also a strange disease that is attacking the regular masses. The disease is turning ordinary people into part machine part humans, with no cure in sight. The up-risers have insurmountable odds to overcome before the end of the battle. All in all Peters has written an excellent tale of man versus cult mentality, with a healthy dose of the dehumanizing effect of the Industrial Revolution.

I enjoyed this book for many reasons: the female friendship, the education about Afghan history and the element of hope at the ending.

Seems plausible, but I'd like to see it. Some of the foundations are compatible with libertarianism, but then they veer into socialism and handwave about conditioning people to like it.

Very great stories in here. I loved them all. More than a few felt like actual pieces of my brain on paper, so maybe if you're not like me you won't enjoy it as much. But you probably will.

This book took me a really long time to read. I kept putting the book down because I just couldn't get into it, it is really strange. Then chapter 8 got me hooked. I loved it until I was about 3/4 of the way done and it got really weird again. I put the book down and didn't touch it again for about 2 weeks. I then decided to finish it and I found that actually started to like it again, even though it was strange...I'm glad it ended the way it did.

I saw the movie first, which made me want to read the book. Both are very entertaining.

Okay, so I've got a crapload of sisters. I have two older sisters and two younger sisters (although the youngest sister is 16 years younger than me and only six so she really doesn't fit into the competitive mold), so I understood the relationship between Lindsey and Alex perfectly. While my sisters and I have all gotten over the whole competitiveness a few years ago, I still remember when it was rampant during our teenage years and it was FIERCE! So, again, I identified with Lindsey on that and that was why originally I intended to give this book five stars. But then, it turned for me. I liked The Opposite of Me for the most part, but in the beginning I thought that it was wonderful. I loved it and couldn't wait to get back to it when I put it down. I just loved Lindsey and was so curious about her relationship with Alex. But then the sob story happened. I'm sorry, but does EVERYTHING have to have a sob story?! Don't get me wrong, I don't want the very few chick-lits I read to be all fluffy and airless, it's just that that particular sob story has been done to death. I would've preferred a different sob story, one that doesn't happen in every other women's fiction/chick-lit book. And another thing: that HUGE family secret? A bit on the disappointing side and just made Alex seem more like a Mary Sue. And I don't like Mary Sue characters. At all. Also, I didn't buy that crap that Alex said (very mild spoiler here) about not knowing that Lindsey was jealous of her. No one is that oblivious. Now that I got that off my chest, I have to say that I did like some of the other aspects of The Opposite of Me. I loved the whole dating service storyline. I thought that it was actually a good way to have a dating service. I also adored Lindsey's parents. They were just so cute and hilarious. Speaking of hilarious, Matt was also great. Such a sweet and great friend. Basically, all of the supporting characters in this book were good. Plus, this book was a major (and I do mean MAJOR cause even when I was bitchin about it, I couldn't put it down) page-turner. I basically read it in one day in breaks between my classes. So, regardless of my little rant above, I did like The Opposite of Me. I thought it was pretty funny and pretty sweet if a bit predictable. However, I would've liked it more if it had been sans big sob story and a little more about the sisters dealing with their issues without that major thing prompting it.
