It started with johnny mnemonic, that crap movie from 1995. Well a few years later (maybe 2000) i was over at Alex Bullas house and i was like, "this is a book to?" Sure, well i borrowed it and then he gets sent off to italy and i never see him again. I suppose i could get his adress and mail it back. whatever. its a nice collection of short stories and i totaly worth stealing from a friend. The stories seem magical in this 21st century world with 24hr torrents and Cybereverything. but if you were playing "find the whumpus" on a mainframe in college, this book was like jesus crapped a rainbow in your brain.

Gave up...............too depressing for me to read now. Will shelve for future. Okay, wasn't fair the first time. Restarted the book and enjoyed it the second time. The writing was engaging. What was ironic was that the author showed empathy for the German occupation forces in the book. The same forces that eventually sent her to her death at a concentration camp. Worth the read.

I believe that this is the best kingdom hearts manga so far simply because of its climax and how it is so similar to the game.

I was very excited to have received The Masterwork of a Painting Elephant by Michelle Cuevas through Goodreads First Reads Giveaway. Not only is it a debut novel for a brand new author, it is illustrated by Ed Young, one of my favorite children's book illustrators (Lon Po Po; Wabi Sabi; Tsunami; Seven Blind Mice and others). I must begin by saying that I was expecting a book suitable for ages 6-12. So keeping this in mind, I began reading. Normally, I would have read the first chapter or two and then put it aside, as this is definitely not a book that will have appeal for readers as young as six. However, since it is a First Reads book, I decided that I really should read the whole thing. In many ways, Masterwork is not a children's story at all, even though the main character, Pigeon is a 10-year-old boy. I did think it is more appropriate for 9 years or 4th graders and up, although the story may appeal more to older adults. It is a quiet little story with a philosophical bent. I especially like this quote from the last chapter, "My elephant was right about feelings of love: that they float away on the wind, circling the earth forever and landing, ever so briefly, from time to time" (p. 136).

I started reading this book a little over a year ago, and since putting it down, I haven't had the will to pick it back up. I'm about 1/2 way through it and while it is a good story and interesting, it is just So LONG. If I'm reading a really long book, it needs to keep me hooked, and this one just isn't doing it. I will pick it back up eventually. My OCD self won't let it go unfinished for much longer.

Ah, the volume with the infamous "STOP JOKING SAKURA" chapters. Yeah, that didn't go down well, did it? At least Sakura meant well. The fight between Killer Bee and Kisame was pretty epic, as was Sasuke's release of Susano'o against Gaara. I don't get people giving Gaara shit for crying a little over Sasuke's story; if anyone in that building understood Sasuke's situation the most, it would definitely be Gaara. Re-read the part of the Genin Test arc where Gaara fights Naruto then come back and try to say chapter 464 is implausible. I can't help but laugh at the last page when Kakashi points out the Sai doppelganger but I don't know why. Maybe it's because Sai seems unreal already without a shadow clone of him running about? Not that I don't love Sai cause I do. Volume 51 looks like it'll have a lot of uncomfortable revelations for Naruto.

A grim, depressing, brilliantly written little novel.

Really great story. Anyone interestrd in egyptology or regency novels will love it!
This book is a triumph of structure and narrative voice. The humour is well judged and the payoff of the "Terrible Awful" justifies the enigma that preceded it. One of the most satisfying and best executed plot lynchpins I can remember! On paper there is something inherently controversial about the prospect of a privileged white author appropriating the language and headspace of a subjugated racial minority, and it's tempting - too tempting for some - to claim it's a kind of veiled racism, triumph over adversity coming only through the actions of a "white saviour" type. But if you read this book properly and concentrate only on the writing, on the sensitive handling of the subject matter, and you allow yourself to be fully enveloped by the sensational characterisations you cannot possibly sustain such arguments. Every fibre in me wants to hate Kathryn Stockett and was prepared to hate this book, but I simply cannot deny it as a feat of gorgeous plotting and prose.
