When I read the description this sounded to me as if Patricia McKillip had taken bits of the ideas and tropes of Riddle-Master of Hed and explored them in a slightly different fashion. Since I particularly adore that trilogy (or omnibus, depending on when you've discovered it), that intrigued me enough to buy it. I'm happy to say that this is - to me - exactly what it is. Now, this is a 250 pages book on my ebook reader at 12pt font size, Riddle-Master is a trilogy - of course certain pieces are missing. We lose a strong heroine fully developed (Raederle), we lose the exploration of the influence of kingship/power over the land (which we had various versions and explorations in various countries in the trilogy), we lose the in-depth development of family ties bar those between children and parents, we have far fewer protagonists and far fewer simultaneous quests. We keep the power of music(Nairn, Zoe, Welkin, Declan, Kelda) and riddles (Phelan, Nairn, Beatrice, Jonah), the power of the older magic and the problems of inheriting it (Declan, Zoe, Quellen, Nairn), family relationships between children and parents (Phelan and his parents, Beatrice and her parents), the danger of challenging a power and needing to overcome it (Nairn, Phelan, Zoe) but the focus of the story remains on Nairn and Phelan - everything else is subsumed - especially the very tacked-on love story. I was satisfied, but my biggest impulse now is to re-read Riddle-Master which gave me so much more of these tropes and explored them so much better. But then again - I don't think there could have been another Riddle-Master of Hed - that trilogy is perfect in and of itself (it should be made into a Ghibli movie by Miyazaki). I think McKillip could take the world of this book and explore, do stand-alones here, that would work ^^. I wouldn't want that for Riddle-Master, that story is already perfect to me.

In "A Miracle for St. Cecilia's," you won't find one main character who seems to tell the story. Much to Father James and his church-goers' chagrin, St. Cecilia's isn't bringing in enough funds to keep it going and is scheduled to be shut down. The church is in great disrepair with leaky roofs and a heating system that regularly needs fixing. Father James has much concern for his parishioners' needs, both spiritual and otherwise. He was directed to find a nursing home for long-time Father Keene, something that Father James doesn't wish to do. He thinks Father Keene would appreciate being with friends instead of strangers during his latter years. The elderly from the church meet regularly after weekday mass at the local diner, The Country Kettle, where Lori is a waitress. She is now the main breadwinner in her family since her husband Bob has taken ill. He needs a bone marrow transplant but first a match needs to be found. An elderly priest is missing during a blizzard. St. Cecilia's is used for a base camp for the search party. George the repairman happens to show up at mealtimes, auspicious occurrences for him. Peter grieves over the loss of someone and takes it out on God. Because of this, he gives his mother the ultimatum - she was to choose either God or him. Is that the Blessed Mary folks are seeing in St. Cecilia's? Crowds come out to see, wanting Father James' attention.

This is one of those books that just connects emotionally. I gave it 5 stars not for outstanding writing (though it is lovely) or any particularly innovative plot choices, but because it is honest and heartfelt. I had fallen in love with the book barely half way through, a rare feeling for me, and before i finished I had a growing list of people I intend to have read it.

I thought this book was awesome!
I loved this book and boys want to create their own rooms so we built a magical tool box and were are going to undergo construction this week and create rooms from our imaginations onto paper and make up our own story. Great book!
Even though the book is lengthy, the humor kept me in stitches compelling me to read on and I finished it in no time. Joining Don Quixote and Sancho Panza, who are both just a little off, on their unusual escapades from one kingdom to the next was a refreshing distraction from my life - which mainly involved feeding my newborn every three hours, diaper changing, preparing meals, cleaning and all of these things done in the convenience of my own home. Cervantes' style of poking fun using exaggerated situations and feelings to present his arguement really hit a cord with me and I was entertained as well as won over.

I like a lot of the ideas in this book, but see some of the suggestions as completely impractical. A good book to get you thinking about how you want to approach teaching responsibility to your children.

You know what? I wasn't expecting much from this book, because I got it for free at the Boston-area SaleForce expo earlier this summer, and I thought "sure, the CEO gives away copies of his book, they must really want to upsell me on their product and the book is going to suck." In fact, it was way better than expected. It talks about not just how SalesForce as a company got started, which is interesting from a business standpoint, but the evolution of cloud computing as a concept. Though I understood that before I read the book, I felt that reading Marc Benioff's story will help me explain the concept to others at work who are looking for answers about the cloud. It's set up as a "playbook" with 111 tips for starting a business and successfully running that startup. I found the ideas and experiences that he outlines to be useful for my current job as well as any future positions I might have. I also felt that reading the book was good preparation for the SalesForce annual conference, "Dreamforce," which I attended the last week of August 2011. All in all, I'd recommend this to anyone interested in reading one tech entrepreneur's story, or anyone about to implement SalesForce at their organization.

Despite how "plagiarized" this book appears to be, it still gives a good story line with character with different personalities. For a young writer, Christopher Paolini wrote what was the biggest influence at the time, that being Lord of the Rings. Now, I can't say I'm a big fan of Lord of the Ring, but it is a well written series that many series draw inspiration from. Eragon is just one of these series of which also got big media attention, hence, the raining on Paolini's parade for writing a thoroughly enjoyable book to read! Eragon is a book filled with fantasy lore well known to many avid fantasy readers with his own twist and story intertwined with a well known and well used blue-print for other fantasy stories. The use of a magical connection between dragon and the Dragon Rider is used effectively, leaving many readers wishing for a dragon of their own. In conclusion, while this book is heavily influenced by the LOTR series, it still retains its own individualistic twist to keep the reader hungry for more.
