I read this book while on a trip to Puerto Escondido Mexico. I was able to immagine Troost's sense of place because of the heat. I also have a clear memory of spending an afternoon over Tarawa, Majuro, and kwajalein atolls flying a U-2 and photographing a bunch of the Pacific islands enroute to Guam. This book was a fascinating and humorous read. It will give any reader a sense of how and why the pockets of civilization throughout the Pacific are on the verge of disappearing. Be sure to look up the website for the organization that Troost's wife was working for at the time the book was written. Very interesting!

I LOVED this book and finished it under 24 hours. It's a cute book and a nice summer read. I am wondering if she will write another book with the same charcters.
My son is almost 4 and he's been taking a real interest in superheroes. He saw this book at a library and was looking forward to reading it all day long. When bedtime rolled around I looked at how long the book was and weighed whether or not it was too long for a before-bed read. But my son was so excited I thought "What the heck!" and went with it. Basically, Awesome Powers is a good introduction for kids to the character of Wolverine. It's likely meant for kids a little older than my son and is a good "I can read by myself!" book for younger elementary school children. That said, we had a nice time reading the book and since I'm not a huge superhero fanatic, I actually learned a decent amount about Wolverine. My son's attention was held the entire time, too. It's pretty straightforward and more of an informational book than a story, but it's not a bad choice for kids who are interested in superheroes. There are also a lot of illustrations, presumably taken from various comic books.
This is one of the best audio books I have ever had the pleasure of listening to. This is the story of three women in Jackson, Mississippi in the early 1960s, two black, one white. Written in alternating chapters from all three women's point of views, the three actresses that read are fabulous!

This is his account of God leading him through two separate CEO positions of major companies, only to find that they were his training courses for his current job, CEO of World Vision, a Christian relief and missionary organization. Impossible to read this book without tears and introspection about how we live our lives.
HarperCollins Advanced Reader Copy This book is aimed at children who have suffered a loss but I am not sure it is complete enough for that. The friendship between the main character and her older neighbor has results that I don't think were developed enough in the story. It was a book that dealt with serious issues but not deep enough - the humor was good but the book left me feeling like something wasn't quite right with the overall perspective of the story.

Originally posted at: http://longandshortreviews.blogspot.c... Blue Ice has an interesting premise, taking two ex-cons, and making them part of a T.V. show that will teach people to protect their valuables. It’s also a recipe for disaster which our heroes find out quickly enough. I felt, at times, the story was going to follow a particular formula and end up boring and agitating to the readers. But, like many a good storyteller, Ms. Dalton managed to throw some curves that made this a worthwhile read. The action showed some ingenuity and intelligence of our main characters. I especially liked Garrett’s use of stones during the getaway. Addison has a backstory that affects the getaway and her relationship with Garrett. It advances the plot, but seems a little worn. Addison and Garrett’s criminal past and their pride in their skills is an interesting twist. Even though they have both served time, they are likeable characters, and their desire to remain law-abiding drives all of their actions. While it is a “happily ever after”, the road there is circuitous, and unexpected. This book is not what I expected, but in a good way. I recommend that you look for this book and enjoy the twists and turns ahead.

Funny and poignant. Lamott is like a quirky, neurotic friend who blogs about her crazy experiences with unconventional motherhood. Her love for her son and her friends are 100% genuine.
