The characters have sex at wildly inappropriate times, and world-building and character development are sacrificed for very lengthy sex scenes. However, it's fast-paced and a fun read. Our heroine is dogged, determined and clever. It's clear the author thought out certain aspects of world-building, even if she didn't show it all to us. I'll be looking for the next book in the series.

An entertaining 'juvenile' (although I would class it more as YA) science fiction novel. Bill is the winner of a high school essay contest for which the prize is to work for a year at the 1992 World's Fair in the Martian Pavilion. The Fair is being held this year on a space station 50,000 miles up from Earth. There are real Martians in the Pavilion. Bill's essay suggested there might be life on Pluto, and explained what that might look like. Bill wants to be a xenobiologist when he grows up. Despite the fact that, as of 2008, there are no Space Station Worlds Fairs, live Martians, or anything resembling nuclear space ships, this is a very believable work. It was written in 1963, just following the moon landing, when just about everybody believed that these things would all come to pass in the near future (besides, maybe, the live Martians thing). The plot is enjoyable and Bill is a quite relatable character, although he does seem more intelligent and mature than your average 17 year old. I found the ending to be slightly abrupt and just a tad bit disappointing, so I would really enjoy reading reading more about Bill and what happens next with both the Martians and the Plutonians.

The story is set on the island of Guernsey in the aftermath of World War II, and it is told through a series of letters. London-based author Juliet Ashton is looking for a subject for her next book when she receives a letter from Dawsey Adams, a farmer on Guernsey. Juliet begins a regular correspondance with Dawsey, and then with several of the other islanders. She learns about their experiences under German occupation, and eventually she feels so drawn to the island and its inhabitants that she decides to make an extended visit, and use it in her next book. As she gathers stories of life during the Nazi occupation (some terrible, some funny, and some describing small acts of heroism), she becomes more and more attached to Guernsey and its people. This made me wish that people still wrote letters. It's really sweet, but the characters are interesting and clever enough that the sweetness doesn't become overwhelming. A lovely book.

This was great. If you've read "The Stupidest Angel" first, you'll find out in this one all about the pilot Tucker Case and how he came across his fruit bat, Roberto. The overall concept of cargo cults and what happens when sick-minded greedy people take advantage is brilliant!
