This is the oddest feeling. I've never been disappointed by a Pendergast book before. I liked it better when the books weren't so personal. It was nice that Pendergast was a mystery, but I feel like we know too much about him now, after this and Fever Dream. I'll keep reading the books, of course, but I hope we get back to the Cabinet of Curiosities type book that I loved so much.

This systematic explanation and review of the types of paper available commercially on the market is fantastic for the artist or any high-end paper user. Silvie Turner divides the book into qualities of papers, types of papers, uses of paper and an extensive index and appendix. The photographs in the book are well-researched and chosen. This book is out of print, but finding a copy is highly recommended.

I loved this book but really don't know what to say about it except "Don't read it if you have a weak stomach".

My school teacher read this to our class for Halloween one year when I was in junior high. For years, I remembered neither the title nor the author. But I remembered the story. Recently, I came across a description of The Monkey’s Paw on Amazon. I sat up, recalled it from school, and exclaimed at my computer, “That’s it!” The Monkey’s Paw is a short story about a family who has a visit from a man possessing a strange monkey’s paw. The paw is supposed to grant three wishes. But be careful what you wish for – a person’s third wish is usually for death!

Told from the perspective of the emperor Claudius (before he is emperor), this narrative covers the rise of the Claudian dynasty. It begins with Claudius's grandmother Livia's marriage to Augustus Caesar and runs through the reigns of Augustus, Tiberius, and Caligula. Though the narrative doesn't flow like fiction, the book contains an accuracy of detail that one would expect from a renowned classicist like Robert Graves. The story of the Caesars contains enough drama to make a great story without embellishment, though at times Graves gets too caught up in minute details and loses some of the narrative flow. There were even a couple of occasions where he gave up the memoir conceit entirely and stuck in a few footnotes, probably much to his editor's chagrin. Also, there were a lot of characters with the same or similar names. I could have used a genealogy diagram. In short, a very interesting read for anyone who wants to learn more about this fascinating period of Roman History, though I would suggest it as a substitute for a history book rather than a riveting drama. And Caligula was one crazy bastard.

I wish there were half ratings because I would have given this 3.5 instead of 3. I love that this series hasn't taken a nose dive like a lot of series do (and for a while it seemed that Harrison was getting in to a funk). Positive things about the book: Rachel is growing up and she's not making as many immature decisions as she use to. Ivy isn't as volatile as she normally is. There is more Trent and Al which is always a bonus and this book is so action packed that you'll blow through it in an afternoon. Not so positive things about the book: because it is so action packed there isn't much of a plot. All I knew was that Rachel was going to go on a cross country trip for her hearing which turned in to a quest for Trent and then unleashing a demon and all of a sudden Al kind of, maybe, sort of has a heart. Maybe. It was just a lot of things at once and I wish Harrison had spent more time developing things to their fullest. What I loved: Trent and Rachel! Al and Rachel! I don't know who I want her to end up with but I just want her to be an adult enough to stop blaming hormones for her attraction and just own up to the fact that she finds someone attractive. I'm actually rooting for some Al/Rachel time more than Trent/Rachel I felt, that out of all the books where Trent plays a large part, he became a real person to me. Most of the time male lead characters become static (like Pierce who bounces between being the lover and betrayer) but Trent went through the whole gamut. He was confident, scared, sad, unsure, content... he had real people feelings and at times I thought he was a jerk and then totally conniving and then a coward. Trent just came alive for me. Things that bothered me: The initial airport scene, everyone but Rachel knew that she wasn't going to be able to get on the plane so it annoyed the piss out of me when that many pages were wasted for no reason other than for everyone to treat Rachel like a child. Not cool. If I had been Rachel I would have been so mad I would have told everyone to fuck off and gone alone. (Rachel is suppose to be this awesome witch but everyone treats her like a child). Rachel's new catchphrase of, "Hey, hi." Unless I purposefully blocked it out I don't remember her saying this. I know that in real life people pick up different sayings but in a book series catchphrases become contrite really easily and new catchphrases almost never work. Also, the showdown's with Ku'Sox were not up to par. I felt like, action wise, I wasn't sure what was going down and how people were placed. For a demon that's allegedly as badass as Ku'Sox is I kind of didn't see it. I think he could have been a big-bad for at least two books. Ku'Sox also seemed silly because he's suppose to be this uber-demon and I don't think proper attention was paid to him and developing his back story. We're just suppose to go with the fact that he's been imprisoned for his own good and other than getting revenge there isn't much of a motive for Ku'Sox to wreck the havoc he does. Because of this, I found him annoying. Rachel's hearing was a joke. Plain and simple. I wasn't buying it at all and Pierce's reinstated position was almost more farfetched than Ku'Sox. But whatever. It just means more Pierce in Rachel's life which mean's more Al. I like Al. Overall I think it was an engaging book that had some holes but it makes me excited for the next book. Rachel is a demon now (sort of) and Trent isn't completely a DB and Al is going to be in the story more which makes me phenomenally happy.

I like that they give you listings of what goes with certain types of food. It's a little hard to read because a good part of the book is listing the spices. However, it is a very good reference.
i'm glad i finally got this book. i had wanted it since we heard about it in school. remember? brian had brought in a copy too.
