a work colleague gave me this to read a few years ago and I remember being entertained by the caustic humour but the man is hateful and a prat, always looking for things to prove his point (the subtitle says it all: A Jaunt Around the Decaying Heart of Britain). It's just chav-baiting albeit sometimes funny. e.g. (from the amazon precis): in Braintree he witnesses a fight between a traffic warden and a pregnant woman holding "a cigarette in one hand and a baby in the other". Those who look for the worst will love it.

I thought that the character of Catherine Morland was funny and overall I found the book a very humorous remark upon gothic fiction.
Interesting portrait of one man's downfall. I found the second part, The Last of Cheri, to be far more fascinating than the first. Can't say I liked the character, but still a good read.
I liked this book, but I thought Jane could be really annoying sometimes. It started out pretty slow but then eventually got better. It wasn't exactly what I expected when I read the summary and it seemed like more of a set up for the next book because most of the major events happen towards the end.
The characters in the book are not believable.

This is probably my favorite novel.
Guilty pleasure-borrow, don't buy

Having visited and spent a fair amount of time in the Pacific Northwest / Seattle / Olympic Peninsula area I could really relate to the setting of this novel. My grandfather hired a couple of Japanese me who brought their families to Ohio as an alternative to being placed in camps during WWII. So, I was especially intrigued by the racism revealed in this story.

I read this over the course of one afternoon, and the only story I can remember clearly is the one by Ilona Andrews. I might have to go back and reread the others, since already the stories are flowing together in my mind and I have forgotten what most of them were about. There was one thing I noticed right away, though: only a few of the stories can be classified as 'romance' in the classic, HEA, sense of the word, or even the sense that they feature an actual, identifiable pairing. Some authors seem to have had difficulties with the short story format, too -- a few of the stories were about nothing much and ended without any sort of climax or denouement, leaving me scratching my head. Even so, this is one of the better anthologies I've read, and nearly all stories were enjoyable, if not perfect or particularly memorable. Also, the Ilona Andrews story was good enough to justify buying the whole anthology, at least for me.
Such a pleasure to read something that makes you feel so good.
