L-O-V-E loved it! Rich is the best word I can use to describe this tale. The characters were full of passion and heart. I was ready to march over the mountain singing at the top of my voice right along with the village. This kind of story makes me want to be a time-traveller!

Gabriel Garcia Marquez is a disgustingly good writer, and he knows it. His prose is so beautiful and rich and seamless that if you don't pay very careful attention to what's happening, the languid style of the book can lull you into a drowsy awe. That's not to say the book is boring; it is not. There's love and war and sex and politics and a thousand other things, but it takes a lot of focus to not simplify the book into a simple love story that lasts over fifty years. It was a lovely book, but at the end, I was ready to move on to another romance.

I knew this book would effect me deeply and of course it did. I picked it up this morning and quickly read 100 pages. Read a little more before dinner and finished just before 11pm. With my husband sleeping next to me I did my best to supress my tears but they still flowed at the end. I do know how all dog stories end so it wasn't the event that happened but rather my endearment to Enzo and to the lovely writing that brought him to life. The middle of the story kept my stomach in a knot but again I loved the writing and the gentle voice of that sweet dog.
Did I miss something? Why is this listed under the "Best books ever" list???? Blah blah blah...maybe this kind of crazy is not nearly as interesting to me as my day job...but this was soooooo lame. It took me forever to finish it because I just never got into it at all. A classic? Why? I will take To Kill a Mockingbird any day.
I really liked this book until I found out what the ending was. I won't give it away, but it is definitely not the ending I wanted. Overall, I thought it was well-written and offered a unique perspective on love and relationships.

For those of us who loathed law school but couldn't articulate exactly why (that is, in a theoretically sophisticated and detached manner), this is the perfect essay/book. Enjoy...

No Country for Old Men is an adaptation of the Coen Brothers movie of the same name. After the Coens won Best Picture, McCarthy watched the movie on a bootleg DVD and wrote the novel, then submitted it to Knopf, whose editors don't often go out to the movies. McCarthy has added several scenes that weren't in the movie and changed many details, which I think is authorial umbrage of the worst sort. Take that, Harry Potter slash fiction. McCarthy's dialogue is the main draw here, and it's a pretty quick read.
