The Cultured Handmaiden by Catherine Cookson is an odd book, yet it pulls you along because it's so odd.

This was pretty good. Everyone had depth, quick plot, etc. I will definitely be reading more of Cashore's novels.
Interesting view of Vietnam during the war.

I wanted to read this book last summer and then Oprah picked it for her book club. I usually don't like the books she picks. So, I took it off my list. Somehow it kept coming across my path so I finally caved and read it. Loved it!!
An informational picture book on Abraham Lincoln, that describes a little bit about each stage in his life from crib to casket. The wording was written in that awkward backwoods way, which took away from the story a bit. Some of the vocabulary words were a little challenging for this books target audience as well, some clarification would have been helpful.

One often hears of anti-heroes, but rarely of their feminine counterparts. Lillian is an anti-heroine. She's stubborn, often crass, and very American, but it is these things which fit her so well against Kleypas's beloved Westcliff, as she's go strength of character in spades. As for Westcliff, he may not be an anti-hero, but he is an unusual one. He's short, intense, literal and unromantic. In other words, another great tale from Kleypas.

Meh. I think it's fair to judge a comic book/graphic novel by the art style, and I just wasn't impressed by it. It was not bad by any means, it just felt generic to me. (Which was really ironic during the part in the beginning where the teacher is critiquing artwork and calling everything they brought in soulless and without its own voice.) The story is definitely different, but almost too weird for me. I still have some questions about what's going on though, so I'll probably read the next volume.
I love the illustrations, but the text was only so-so. In fact I'd have prefered there not to be a text, so that children could explore the images.

Disturbing is an understatement. I had to skip over some of the more gruesome passages. What's scary is how matter-of-fact the narration is--the tone never changes. This is a commendable satire of yuppie culture, in my opinion.
