Ihmettelen, miksi en ole tätä aiemmin lukenut. Elokuvana kyllä jo koulussa. Murteesta pelkkää plussaa.

Not a bad book. I loke the original story, but I like how it was modernized to fit today.

** spoiler alert ** A Booksquirm Book Club Selection. January's Assignment: Chapters 1-2 I’m not completely sure about the character development so far. I don’t have a very good mental image of the main character. However, at the end of Chapter 2, I did have the interest to continue further into the book. I think the mysteriousness of who the main character is and what has happened to her is a good hook. Our copy from the library has an ‘African American’ sticker on it, but I’m not sure why, other than the author herself was African American. February's Assignment: Chapters 3-4 Ok, a little disturbed with the idea that Wright just had sex with someone that looks like she's 10. But putting that aside, I did really enjoy the 2 chapters that we read this time around. I enjoy Butler's writing style and I do like a good vampire story (no, Twilight doesn't count). The introduction that the girl is a product of a lab experiment took me on a new twist that makes me want to keep reading. I like that they are using the vampire mythos that includes the "thrall" aspect of those from whom the vampire feeds. March's Assignment: Chapters 5-6 I'm still very disturbed by the sex with someone that looks like she's pre-pubescent. It's creaping me out. We haven't gotten more info on thr experiment aspect, which still intrigues me. But I don't know how much more of the pedophile overtones I'll be able to take. April's Assignment: Chapter 7-8 So now the story is picking up. Questions are beginning to be answered and the fledgling vampire sex is not quite as creapy as I felt it to be earlier. Corse, that could be because it wasn't rwally part of the story in these chapters. I'm starting to like the story m/ore now. I'd like to know more about the Ina and the genetic ezperimentation.

Single sentence summary: Amelia sees ghosts and lives her life by a set of rules to keep the ghosts at bay, but when she breaks the first of those rules, her life takes a turn and now she is searching for a killer. I feel sort of silly about this book. When I picked it up, the authors name was familiar but I didn’t know why. Then I read this book and still couldn’t figure it out. Only when I went to find out more about the author did I realize I’ve read Amanda Stevens before. I read the Whispering Room last year and really enjoyed it. I shouldn’t have been surprised then that I loved this book. Amelia is a character you can’t help but be enchanted by. She lives by the rules her father established when he found out she too could see ghosts. Those rules are: 1. Never acknowledge the dead. If you do, they'll feed off your energy like parasites, slowly draining your life away. 2. Never stray too far from hallowed ground, you're safe there. 3. Keep your distance from people who are haunted. They are a terrible threat and can't be trusted. 4. Never, ever tempt fate. She has kept those rules her whole life, which is pretty impressive considering she is a graveyard restorer. The day she breaks the first rule things are bound to happen. This factors made Amelia interesting and I was entertained the entire book. The other characters were just as interesting. The lead detective is haunted by his dead wife and child. The characters weren’t the only great component of this book. I was thoroughly engrossed by the mystery. I felt sucked into the history and heat of the graveyard and what had happened there. I loved reading this book and I’m looking forward to see how the series continues. 5 Stars. I received a digital copy of this book from the publisher.

Short stories is the perfect medium for horror stories. It's concise, holds the suspense, and it keeps you wanting for more. The book contains about 10 or so ghost stories mostly from the 1800-early 1900s, which is right my genre (I love old ghost stories). Notable ones include Bram Stroker's "The Judge's House" and my all-time favorite Sheridan LeFanu's "The Monkey's Paw". Since the stories have been written for more than a century, they're very predictable (especially "Monkey's Paw", whose plot has been reworked into other stories countless of times). I guess it's more for the traditional-ghost story fans, those who like curling up to a horror book on a rainy night, the ones that still finds some sort of creepy mystery in a foggy night. If you're looking for more hack-and-saw type of horror, skip this.

Brilliant farce/satire in a fascinating alternate world. Lots of fun for fans of classic literature. A worthy competitor for Terry Pratchett.

this is a fantastic book, a good read for sure! I read this after I saw the movie a year or more so ago - I think I actually brought it after I saw it on the same day! I did compare them together but they were both amazing in their own ways. Fantastic book! You must read this.

I had this book for a long time & was reluctant to read it because I knew it was a sad tale. So glad I've finally read it. It gives me a new appreciation for those who have suffered through severe poverty & yet have been able to do with great grace, humor & insight. Never give up! Immediately started reading the sequel to it because I wanted to know how the next phase of Frank McCourt's life turned out.
