The book was so hard and real that it is hard to get teary eyed as one probably should. I felt stunned and unnerved instead of emotional or sympathetic. I love to have a book surprise me. Five stars...just try finding another author/book that affects you like this one will.

It took more than half a century before her last work, Suite Française, was finally published. The manuscripts were found along with other papers in a suitcase kept unexamined by Némirovsky’s daughters until recently. Her eventual death in a Nazi death camp in 1942 rendered her final masterpiece incomplete. Interesting series, but a bit uneven. My biggest complaint with this volume was the overly quick confrontation and vanquishing of Darva, and that the "Lost Word" was actually several. Still, though, a good read.

I really enjoyed this book for the most part, but It left a lot of things unfinished and I don't like that. I think the author also go a little "Wordie" while describing some things in the book. There were a few times I thought "Just spit it out already". But over all I like having the new twist to Red Riding Hood.

Re-reading this book right now. I forgot how powerful it is in character, plot, and style. I love how Walker writes it in diary form and creates such a real voice for Celie. I'm struck by how she describes herself as feeling like wood when she's around men - specifically her father and Mr. _____. How apt. I'm also picking up on the not-so-subtle development of Celie's feelings for Shug. On a first reading, it's easy to overlook it. I'm also trying to experience the book as text and get the movie version (though fabulous and one of my favorites!) out of my mind.

Created in a lab using animal DNA, New Species were “treated as though they were guinea pigs, tools, and nothing more” in the name of science. It is hard to trust or love when you have only known pain and hate. Ellie Brower only knew the test subject as 416, but she was drawn to him. She agrees to go undercover as a spy to gather evidence of Mercile Industries illegal drug research, in hopes of freeing all the test subjects, but especially 416. A strong character, she is determined to do anything to save the New Species, even die. She is one person you can’t help but admire and applaud for throughout the story. 416, also known as Fury, can never forget Ellie but he feels betrayed and wants revenge when he comes face to face with her at the New Species Homeland compound, even though there is something inside him that does not want to see her hurt. Communication breakdown can cause a lot of problems and misunderstanding. Watching the plot play out, I found I wanted to scream a few times because of others sticking their noses into the middle of Fury and Ellie’s business. However, I must say it made for an exciting and a sweet love story even if I felt the need to pull my hair out because of all the interference. I saw a few editing errors -- misued words mostly -- but nothing that pulled me from the story. I loved the plot; it was unique and easy to imagine with today’s technology in DNA testing, in which something like this could really happen. It was enthralling in that animalistic kind of way, with some hot sex scenes and a lot of heart melting bonding between two people. Most definitely a delicious testosterone filled book that is worth reading.
