This book was a really cool fantasy story that I had always wanted to read in middle school. I, being practically illiterate at that time of my life, didn't read it until I was a grad student :-/. Anyway, it sets a storyline of a very easy to follow, yet intriguing plot with interesting characters and many twists/turns that were unexpected. Great read
Meet Dante. A centuries-old Italian vampire who has devoted his life to being a warrior, one to kill the bad vampires and rogues so that the good vampires can live in peace and quite among the humans. But one night, he gets in over his head and needs to refuel. Enter Tess, a beautiful young woman who owns a struggling veterinary practice. Dante needs blood to heal his wounds and Tess is the closest source, but after he has taken what he needs, he discovers that Tess has an interesting birthmark, one that means nothing to her but to Dante it will mean his life is forever changed. Together, the two must struggle to come to terms with this new challenge along with finding who is selling the mind-altering drugs to innocent, young vampires, turning them into to ruthless killers. Very good series. The original vampires of this series are from outer-space, alien beings who have mated with human females, causing the new generation of vampires. There are a number of interesting characters throughout the book, yet each book focuses on one in particular.
I really wanted to like this book more than I did. It was just so artificial and self conscious. The information about the artist Calder was interesting but she kept telling us over and over how much we like his work and how much children like his work. I am awfuly glad there weren't a list of "Discussion Questions" at the end of the book - I might have thrown it across the room. The mystery is also artificial and self conscious and terribly contrived - lots of "ohhh, someone was watching" and nearly Deus ex Machina conclusions. I suppose kids might enjoy the book. The kid characters are not too bad and it is fun when kids have some independence to do stuff. Kids are also pretty used to the superficial artifice of Disney and school textbooks, but I would prefer a book like Girl with a Pearl Earring to tell kids about art.
Charles Frazier has a way of making you both be part of the story as well as stand outside it and watch events unfold. His writing is both lush and stark at the same time.

A typical Jodi Picoult-intense and engaging until the very end!! I love that I can never predict how her books are going to end.

Wonderful story about Brooklyn and Ireland in the 1950's- what a different time it was then--. Enjoyed the characters and the life of Eilis in the 2 different worlds.
