My friend, who does does therapy work with her canine companion, Teddy, loaned me this book. Jon Katz has more than several books about dogs, this one being about a rescued Border Collie named Izzy and his acquisition of a puppy, Lenore, a Labrador Retriever. I'm amazed at how calm Teddy, an Australian Shepard, is and how well he took to doing therapy work and visition. Katz' Izzy is equally amazing as Izzy's breed is not necessarily a calm one either and seemed to instinctively know what to do. My friend also has said what Katz inferred as well...when the dog is done, he'll let you know. I was amused by Katz' Bedlam Farm, the goats and donkeys and especially his 2500 pound bull, Elvis.

This was one of the books that got me interested in studying English. Parts of it are cheesy, sure, but there's so much good stuff in here: the epigrams, the high drama, and Lord Henry, who's one of my favorite fictional characters.

What's not to like. It's not great literature but it has mystery, witches, vampires, daemons, history, conflict, good guys, bad guys, travel, love etc. Was just what I needed during these gray winter days.

This book is okay. It is cute and a quick read, but a bit too mystical and cheesy for me. Personal legends, souls of the world, universal languages: overly ambiguous spiritual nonsense, in my humble opinion. I do not want to be too negative, however. I did enjoy reading it and I am glad I can check it off my reading list. It's just not my kind of story.

i'm reading this to revise high school curriculum... i feel like i'm sitting inside okonkwo's mind with the unique view that allows for insight/ understanding of the situation of missionary infiltration. reading this book makes me wonder what different people think when they read it. it read like yet another inevitable tragedy of inconsiderate destruction of an entire community/ tradition/ belief system with the justification of religious Right (or might?) it's the age old battle between believers and non-believers, but in this case they can not, by their individual practices, exist side by side. so then the next stage is the ultimate recession of the weaker group. although that determination is not always "fair", as the missionaries have the technologies to overcome. guns and cannons versus spears and stones. an inevitable historic tragedy. or a religious triumph.

Loved this story! Can't wait to read book two and three! My son was urging me to finish the book quickly because he wanted it next. It didn't take long to demolish the book as the pages were turning quickly, especially after the games started. I recommend for 5th/6th/7th and above to read this series.

I decided to reread this series before continuing on with the Heroes of Olympus series as I got the next two in that series and have yet to read them. I have always loved mythology! While the narrative is mildly juvenile, which I don't mind because it is so refreshing to have such a quick and easy read, the content is woven together so well! I feel like I'm reliving ancient history in the world as we know it today and that part alone is magical. It's such a different pace than Harry potter, Septimus Heap and Charlie Bone. If you like mythology I definitely recommend this book! And it is way better than the movie, btw!
