sooo disappointing. first, the writing was just so bad. and then, there's good ideas for plotlines and characters, but he takes them places that are unsatisfying and annoying or just plain weird. it was full of what i would call 'teenage boy self-glorification motifs'; those can be okay if they are used purposely, and motivated by the book's characters themselves, but i think they're annoying if it's clear that this is actually the way the author views the world and he has no other perspective. maybe this is the equivalent of a romance novel for teenage boys...

I bought this book back in 2001, I must confess since then I only manage to read its first 29 pages. This book studies the history of English literature from Old & Middle English [includes there is the story of Beowulf:] to the present. What I learn so far is that the Christian monks and nuns were the guardians of culture, as they were virtually the only people who could read and write before the 14th century. I have an impression that this is a valuable collection, well organized and contains wealth of information.I hope I can pick it up again sometime and start reading where I left off.

I bought this book after listening to an old interview with Carver where he talked about the editorship of this book. The stories selected are very similar to Carver's own work, which is wonderful. I kept referring back to the introduction where he talked about his selection process. All of these stories were great - my favorites were: Gryphon - Charles Baxter Star Food - Ethan Canin Doe Season - David Michael Kaplan All My Relations - Christopher McIlroy Invisible Life - Kent Nelson Lawns - Mona Simpson The Rich Brother - Tobias Wolff
