I was prepared to give this book five stars. However, the last five chapters so thoroughly upset me that I could no longer find this book amazing and, instead, could merely like it. It has been a long time since a book left me feeling so sad and hopeless and this was SO not what I was expecting when I picked up this book.
Enjoyed just as much as the first book.

Somewhere I own a hardcover copy of this book that my mom gave me when I was eleven. It's still one of my favorite books ever.
A good friend of mine recommended this book to me when I chucked everything and took off across the country to Oregon to find myself. It is an amazing book; I loved it!
My sister gave this to me when were just out of high school. It's about Luke. I wonder if I read it now if I would love it as much?

This is my second read of Frankenstein: The Modern Prometheus." I was much younger when I first read it. I still marvel that Mary Shelley was only 19 when she wrote it. She was ahead of her time in dreaming up the mad scientist, Victor Frankenstein. He plays God and creates the "abhorred monster"/"wretched devil" - then irresponsibly abandons his creation in disgust and returns to his wealthy, idyllic life. His actions come back to haunt him and result in the destruction of all he loves. Frankly, I found the monster a little more sympathetic character than his creator. Victor Frankenstein never truly seemed sorry for his actions. In fact, he appeared whiny, fragile and spoiled as he traveled throughout Europe enjoying nature to escape his "woes." He even lets an innocent woman hang rather than attempt to reveal the true murderer and thus his culpability. The unnamed monster has to be one of the most articulate in literature (he uses "thee" and "thou"). In fact, the monster reads and learns from Paradise Lost, Plutarch's Lives, and The Sorrows of Young Werther - books he finds lost in the woods. (Perhaps if I misplace leather bound editions of these books somewhere for my kids to discover, they'll be inspired to read them?)
This book is great! It is very entertaining and funny however still able to surprise me. The characters are hilarious, the dialogue is witty and sarcastic and the plot is without-a-doubt hooking. Deadly Cool has enough mystery, enough laughs and just a splash of romance to keep the reader completely interested. I'm really looking forward to Social Suicide - I want to see where Halliday takes Chase&Hartley (:

This book was a mostly successful return to the life of FitzChivalry Farseer that contained a lot of elements from what made the first trilogy so successful. The narrator is clearly likeable, complex, and someone whose life you want to read about. The main conflict in the book (the fact the Prince has gone missing) is important enough to carry the book and it hints at deeper issues that will be resolved in the rest of the trilogy. Plus, by the time it was over, there was magic, loss, betrayal, redemption, sword fights and all the hallmarks of a good fantasy novel. The biggest problem with the book was it was about 200 pages too long. The book begins static and staid, giving us the backstory of what happened over the past 15 years and generally showing that Fitz's life was pretty boring. The problem was it did that by BEING boring. I felt as stuck in the first 200 pages as Fitz did in his life. It made the second half more of a relief, but I question it as a literary technique. Still, I did buy the rest of the trilogy and will read it in the hopes that the action stays ramped up a notch.
