I think the reason why this was in Oprah's book club is that it is a story about a marriage. No happy ending, just a simple story about all the tough things that a poor couple goes through. I wasn't too interested and it took me a long time to get through the book.

I read this the first time about 5 years or more ago. I had been complaining that everything I had been reading had sad or unsatisfactory endings, so Carolyn O recommended this book. I wasn't blown away by it and haven't read the rest of the series. So now I have read it for book group. It was enjoyable enough. It still didn't live up to all the hype for me - the cover quote uses the word 'hilarious.' Did I miss something? I may have laughed out loud once. Precious Ramotswe is an intersting character. The idea that she felt she could just start a detective agency with no background or training, but simply because she is observant, was also interesting. And by using her observational skills and intuition, she makes a pretty good go of it. There was at least one moment that reminded me of scary movies where the person goes in the house after discovering the door is ajar - or goes into the basement when the power is out - and you want to shout and say 'Don't be stupid!' The chances Mma Ramotswe takes seem a little crazy, especially driving out to the middle of nowhere, alone, to confront someone who even she believes is dangerous. Really? If I am not questioning the sense of a character who is portrayed as being very sensible, then I am questioning the author asking us to believe this is in character - a little. She is certainly portrayed as very self-sufficient. For all that, it is intersting to get this perspective of Africa and an African woman who wants to hang on to the old Africa There is a happy ending. And I might even read the next one, but I'm not rushing to do that.

Once I started, I couldn't put it down. It was a GREAT read.
Otro novelón. Es maravilloso.
I am afraid I didn't know much about the Rawanda genocide until I read this book, but after reading this book, I will never forget it. Immaculee's story is amazing, and her faith in God touched my heart. The thing I found most disturbing about her story was that many of the people killed were brutally murdered by their own friends and neighbors. It was very startling to see how easy it is for a few instigators to spread enough hatred that people would go from being friends and neighbors, to hating and hunting each other all within a few months. If you thought that Nazi Germany could never happen again, you need to read this book.

exhausting. a chore.
An interesting read, it jumps back and forth in time, and provides great insight into the lives of immigrants in the US in the 20s and 30s...

Picked up this book and finished it in one sitting. Easy read, humorous, but conveyed an important message about feminism and being a lesbian in American society...the world is different and difficult when you walk through it as a woman. Even though this was set in the '50s and '60s, I believe that many of the main character's experiences would still live true today. "I wished I could walk down the streets & not hear those constant, abrasive sounds from the mouths of the opposite sex. Damn, I wished the world would let me be myself."

This book seemed much longer than it's 448 pages. I kind of resented the addition of all the new characters, the cannibalism, killing all the males subplot, and origin story of the vampires. Quite underwhelming over all. Not to mention that the author seems to do everything possible to get me to hate the Akasha character. You'd think that Anne Rice could come up with something better than this.

Overall I'd rate this as a good read. I wanted to find out what happend to the characters and while I guessed some of the outcome I was far from guessing all of what was going on. I found the narrative structure annoying, particularly (as a friend pointed out) the change between present and past tense all the time (I knew something was jarring, I just couldn't put my finger on why it felt wrong). Not that I can cast too many stones with my grammatically challenged writing. Despite the irritations and some small frustrations in the plot the story is engaging and I'm glad my bookclub picked it to read.
