Of Mice and Men was a book I was assigned to read in English class. I don’t usually like reading books written a long time ago, they don’t seem interesting. But I really like this book. There were a lot of interesting characters; none of their personalites were alike. I also liked how John Steinbeck used characters to symbolize different things. The setting is good too. I like how he used details he described it really well. George and Lennie are the main characters in Of Mice and Men. George and Lennie are really close but really different. Like other characters they have their own personality. Slim is the guy everyone likes. Curley is mean; he doesn’t like anyone who goes near his wife. Curley’s wife starts trouble. She walks around talking to the men on the ranch because she doesn’t have anything to do. George is over protective, the hard guy. He protects Lennie from people like Curley. Lennie is the dumb one. Easily distracted, gets into a lot of trouble when he doesn’t even know it. Some characters in this book represent different things going on in that time period. Curley’s wife represents all the women. Women than were allowed to do a few things stay home, cook, clean, and take care of the husband and kids. But she didn’t do that. She frustrated Curley by walking around the ranch, talking to the other guys. Then there is Crooks. He is the African American stable buck. He represents African Americans. Even after slavery people like Crooks were still treated bad. He had to sleep in the barn with the horses by himself because he was black. The setting is a very important part of the book. It sets the scene, sometimes even the mood. I don’t like books when the setting is a while back; I prefer them to be written before at least 1970. But I could honestly make an exception for Of Mice and Men. John Steinbeck did a good job describing the setting. He used a lot of details and it made the book a lot better. It was like you were in there. Some books you can see something if you knew what they were saying, but since it was in the 1920’s its hard to imagine what it looked like. Overall I really liked Of Mice and Men. The characters were all different. They had their own qualities that made them, them. John Steinbeck also used he characters to symbolize other things, like what it was like for women and African Americans. To bring it all together he did a good job describing setting. At first I didn’t think I would like the book, I really did.

I don't want to be redundant in my praise of this book, so here's a lovely counter-sentiment from my little sis: 'catcher in the rye is a horrible book, and only adolesent boys breaking from puberty would ever think that that book is good. Grow up brother 2. Grow up for good.'
I found this book extremely entertaining and read it in three days. Joe still is on his journey and I think still has things to learn about his faith (don't we all)regarding dogma, etc. Also, he struggles with reeling in his ego. If he ever ventures on to Goodreads and reads this, this is not an insult.;) I think the ego comes from years of beating down and being beat up by Hollywood, not to mention the childhood he had. I spent some time in Hollywood and I frequently thank God I left. I couldn't take its superficiality. However, Joe's heart seems much bigger than his ego and he humble's himself, alot. He admits to flunking Christian test number 1, 2, 3, 4 etc, etc. etc, etc. It seems by the end of the book his ego has become smaller. He is starting to pass the tests that come his way. You can't help but grow very fond of him, and what a life he has had. There were times I was busting out laughing and then filling up with tears. I wish Joe peace and luck. And that he continues to grow in his faith. If he was my neighbor, I'd look forward to chatting as we passed each other on walks around the neighborhood.

This was the first Mary Roach book I read, but now I'm interested in picking up some of her other nonfiction. Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers was very informative and covered a vast number of topics having to do with what happens to human bodies after death: she tours a "body farm", where scientists study rates of decomposition in various environments, sits in on a plastic surgery class where students practice procedures on severed heads, and visits an automotive testing facility where cadavers are used when crash test dummies aren't enough to provide reliable data, among others. She also explores the history of body-snatching as well as "cannibalism" in early eastern medicine and the modern western world (such as the trend of new mothers eating placenta for the purported health benefits). There are some serious gross-out sections, of course. I have a very strong stomach, but there were moments when I sat up and went "Ew, ew, ew!" In addition to being informative and easily understandable by the layperson, Roach tackles the subject matter with humor while still maintaining respect for the dead - a difficult undertaking. For the most part, I appreciated the humor, as it made what could potentially be a depressing and academic text into quite a light read, but at times it felt like the jokes were a bit forced. She was like that girl at the party who just keeps cracking jokes, with less material each time - the first few are funny, but then it gets grating. You shouldn't have to keep reassuring your readers that you are, in fact, funny. We get it. And don't even get me started on the number of times she referred to herself as "quirky" or similar. Despite that, I enjoyed this book quite a bit and will definitely read more of the author's work.

This book is very intense. Sometimes can get overbearing and repetitive. Some people may consider his views too extreme. He educates the reader on the government (almost as a government as a coorporation) and the administrative officials that apparently hold the American citizens interests as their main objective. But as you read on, you learn that from his opinion, the government is run for the interests of the extremely rich who own large businesses ect. He also educates the reader about war, and why it exists, and what it takes for citizens to get what they need. He touches on racisim as well. One question that he forces you to recognize, is Who is "We" when the president or other officials give a speach about America, and Who is fighting the war and who reaps the benefits. He also forces the reader to understand what democracy is and how little of it our system truly holds true to.

Vonnegut is just fucking good. I highly recommend this one. It's at least as good as Slaughterhouse 5, maybe better.

I am generally a big fan of Prose's work (fighting the urge to pun right now), but this is not among her best. It's one of her early works, and I think that probably has a lot to do with it. It's very well written, but the observations about her characters just aren't as sharp as they have grown to be in some of her more recent novels. This attempts to be a satirical novel but lacks the subtlety to succeed entirely. Her skill in this regard has grown significantly since this novel's publication in 1992, as evidenced by *Blue Angel* and *A Changed Man*.
