This book was amazing!! I was hooked from page one and was almost drooling over the possibilities! I didn't completely figure the plot out until the last page. It keeps you hooked and guessing from the start. I didn't know who to trust and who to believe! This is a good read for those of you who like suspense! I could and will probably read this one again!!
This book isn't chronological - in fact, each chapter can be considered independently of the rest - and it would be worth picking it up even just to read one of them. Each chapter is devoted to some legendary story surrounding the founding fathers - for example, the duel between Hamilton and Burr, or the friendship-turned-enmity between Adams and Jefferson, or the compromise that resulted in the capitol being built on the Potomac. One or two of the stories drags on a bit, but they're all interesting.

Again! Again! That is what my daughter says after I read her a book she especially likes. It took me a long time to read and now that I am done - I am sorry I won't be toting it in my bag anymore. It is everything I hoped it would be & more. The best part is she didn't discover her life's work until she was in her late 30s. An inspiring woman! Now I just have to find the time to crack open Mastering the Art of French Cooking.

A quick read. Hemingway satirizes Sherwood Anderson, John Dos Passos, James Joyce, D.H. Lawrence, etc. It all goes down in Northern Michigan. I read Torrents after reading The 42nd Parallel by Dos Passos, from which Hemingway borrows the grandiose mood and super-earnest young Americans. Hemingway sits these strapping fellows down in podunk bars and has them muse about the fairy-traceries of frost on the windows and the beauty of Paris. One of them acquires a pet sparrow and marries an elderly English waitress in Petoskey. Riffing on the British Lake District follows. There are silly author's notes interspersed within the text, including one describing a gourmet French meal Hemingway enjoyed with (who else but) John Dos Passos. The notes ramble on and on. At one point Hemingway claims that he translated the New Testament into Ojibwa. The absurdity of Torrents makes it an entertaining read, but a lot of its humor will be lost on people who aren't into the Lost Generation. It would probably be REALLY funny to someone who has read more widely in the early 20th century milieu. Moving forward, someone should write a book like Torrents using Bret Easton Ellis / Chuck Palahniuk / Dave Eggers / Jonathan Safran Foer as canon fodder. Something about a body-building Wall Street bond trader with a vast reservoir of survivor guilt, who falls in with a bunch of nihilistic organ donors and gives up his pancreas while still alive. It would need Foer-style visual aids to drive home the literary gaggery. Like an up-close picture of the Islets of Langerhans, followed by a really gross description of insulin production. Yeahhhhhh....

For middle schoolers, This is a great story mergered with great graphic imagery to make for an outstanding book! A dad's promise is not to be taken lightly. It almost made me a believer.

A really good book! I'm waiting to read what will happen next!
I wouldn't recommend this book at all. I found it boring, totally focused on the main character's selfishness! A couple of funny paragraphs across 240 pages ...

Great trip, but this edition was actually pretty shit in its set up. I would definately get separate books on China, Mongolia and Russia to expand the trip. It was organized in a confusing manner, we used it and loved it but also think there could better versions in the future...

so creative and unique you won't even know its about economics. i particularly love how politically incorrect and honest this book is.
Bu kitabın bu noktası benim 3 yaşındaki benim anlayış ötesinde oldu. Thistle içeri girer ve her şeyde iyidir. Kaz dışlanmış ve mutsuz hissediyor çünkü Thistle'nin yapmak istediklerini yapmaktan hoşlanmıyor.
