i liked Ender in Exile well enough. it was interesting, because the transition between ender the battle school graduate and the ender on lusitania in the later books is well done and at the same time, not. it's obvious that ender is not as mature as he is when he lands on lusitania. yet, it's hard to say that he changes much. to be fair, ender in exile only covers about 50 of the 3000 realtime years that ender is voyaging. still, i guess i expected more of a transition. valentine is also somewhat bothersome. she thinks she understands everyone and everything and their intentions, when she so clearly does not understand the complete story of everything. this isn't the valentine that the reader trusts and respects and loves in the other books. ender in exile was mostly a light, entertaining read, but it didn't do much for the saga, besides start off anti-ender sentiments to build in the future and discover the identity and whereabouts of Bean and Petra's last son (which, i guess, is effectively more an addition to the shadow series). at this point in the saga, i think card is writing just to write. there was no need to write ender in exile, but i think his mind wanted more information to fill in that gap from ender's game to speaker for the dead - that he wanted to make it clear to himself. the thing is, though, he had already said enough on the topic in the other books of the saga, and that made reading ender in exile kind of like deja vu. it made me remember a bunch of other things that he said in other novels that fit in with the happenings of the plot, without the story actually contributing to any of these memories and whatnot

It's never too early or too late to read aloud to children. Teachers and staff reading at school provides good role models for children.

I don't remember much about this book, other than loving it so passionately that I was sad to finish it...it is the only book I have ever considered starting again as soon as I read the last page, just because I wasn't ready to put it down.

To me, a near-perfect read.

This completely satisfied my need for adult books about magic. Very inventive and playful, but dark and serious at the same time. You must read The Magicians first to understand the context of this magical world. I can't imagine there won't be a third. For those who love HP, Narnia and Neil Gaiman.

I liked samarkand much more. I'm a sucker for personal narratives about the mediterranean and the mideast. When i hear of interplay between them in a novel, i get excited. But, the book left me wanting more. The plot seemed rushed, and as though half the book is missing. Perhaps, it has the makings of a great screenplay, but as a novel it just didnt click. The structure was nice, but there was alot missing. overall, i'm a maalouf fan, and i'm going to read his books.
I read this book in tandem with "Radical." It was quite a one/two punch. The books are similar in scope and challenge but reach the same conclusions from different angles. I recommend reading both. Chan's chapter on "lukewarm" is convicting and insightful.

When a white servant girl violates the order of plantation society, she unleashes a tragedy that exposes the worst and best in the people she has come to call her family. Orphaned while onboard ship from Ireland, seven-year-old Lavinia arrives on the steps of a tobacco plantation where she is to live and work with the slaves of the kitchen house. Under the care of Belle, the master's illegitimate daughter, Lavinia becomes deeply bonded to her adopted family, though she is set apart from them by her white skin. Eventually, Lavinia is accepted into the world of the big house, where the master is absent and the mistress battles opium addiction. Lavinia finds herself perilously straddling two very different worlds. When she is forced to make a choice, loyalties are brought into question, dangerous truths are laid bare, and lives are put at risk. I finished right before bed last night, and I couldn't sleep forever because I just kept thinking about the story and the characters. My heart just broke for them all, and all the misery they had to deal with throughout their lives! All in all a wonderfully tragic story. You really feel for these characters. LOVED IT! :)
