Etched in Bone by Adrian Phoenix Urban Fantasy- Feb. 22nd, 2011 3 ½ stars This story is the forth in the Maker’s Song series. As a newbie to the series I was impressed by the complexity of the world the author created but this also made it difficult to keep up with the storyline. This book starts out with a bang as the heroine, FBI agent Heather Wallace is unknowingly betrayed by her family in the first two chapters. The rest of the book backtracks to the days before this tragic event and mainly features Heather’s lover Dante. Dante is faced with some very torturous changes as he is pulled from all sides. But his one reprieve is his love for Heather. Gritty, dark and filled with drama and despair. I liked the gutsy heroine and could feel her courage, pain and anguish. Dante is more of a mysterious character who is definitely sexy. I liked how multifaceted this novel was but this also ensured that I had to concentrate to follow it. I am conflicted about this book because while I give the author kudos for the seamy world and interesting characters, the storyline did not have a real payoff at the end. This made me feel a bit cheated. I wish the author had made the early chapters and ending a separate book and not added them to the rest of the storyline. I understand this is an Urban Fantasy series but usually authors have more resolve at the end than this horrendous cliffhanger. Because of this, and not having read the previous books, the story eventually frustrated me in many ways. If you are a fan of this series, I believe you will love this book. But if you haven’t read this series yet I would start with one of the earlier books first or maybe wait to read this book after the next book comes out. In truth I did not get this book. I enjoyed reading it. The language was good. And as a window into Prague this book is well worth reading. But I just did not feel that I "got" what the author was trying to say. --- I reread this book. I got it this time. It is very good. I don't normally like nooks as heavy handed as this one, but this was well done, and thats why I rate it so highly. To handle the ideas of eternal return versus the fact that people only get one shot at life and then weave into this the concepts of lightness and weight into it is a tall order to pull off and Kundera does. The structure of the novel is interesting as well since portions of the story repeat but with different narratives. I found this very interesting given that he begins the novel talking about the concept of eternal return. This is well done because you can enjoy the novel despite the gymnastics Kundera is pulling off here. I was impressed once I realized that I could read this with enjoyment while he was working at multiple levels in his craft of this book. He even breaks the fourth wall at some point speaking directly to the reader as himself analyzing his own characters, and it works. The narrative rises to the level of self-consciousness speaking directly to the reader then dips immediately back beneath the surface, to dive into the narrative of his ideas and then deeper into the dream of his fiction. It is done seamlessly. That alone is why I rate this highly. Very well done as I could enjoy the novel without being distracted by this. Its also a good historical piece given the author's own experience with the soviet invasion of his country, and the prague spring before that.

I insisted hard to finish it, when I read it as a teenage, and when I reread it as a young. It was difficult for me to understand why Oliver is an orphan boy, why I should pity him, and why I should believe that it's almost his fault living so misrable, ...

I have to admit that I often read books with an eye to edit. What would I cut to make it more efficient? This is a story of a woman trying to save the last nesting ground of the scarlet macaw in Belize from being flooded by the construction of a dam to provide her country with much needed electricity. Did we need the chapter on the Mayan civilization? Did we need to know the entire colonial history of Belize? Did we need an overview of dams in the United States? The answer is yes. All this information and more contributes to the conflict in this beautifully balanced book. I wouldn’t have cut a single word.

Great, random humor. Although, by the time you've read all the books you realize nothing was random or left unexplained. It's genius and great fun. I love British humor.

Good book....basically a historical fiction with great characters. I absolutely could not believe that I had never heard of this part of WWII history.
