I love mysteries and detective novels - especially those that take place in LA. This is my first experience with T. Jefferson Parker and I am very impressed. This particular novel is the first of 6 in a series that deal with a detective: Charlie Hood, a young veteran of the Afghanistan wars. They also deal heavily with the drug wars and mess in Mexico, so there is an extreemely horrifying edge to them. These are books that compel you to keep reading...the main characters here, other than Charlie are Allison Murrietta - alleged great great great whatever grandaughter of the outlaw Joaquin Murrietta, which also gives some spice to the series, and her son (whose name escapes me now). In any event, if you love detective novels about LA, and love California history, you will love this one.
Jesus was human, after all.
Neil Gaiman rocks my socks. Don't know how he does it but he manages to make one story both creepy, spooky, sweet, funny and utterly believable all at the same time.

Lisa Graff's first novel is wonderful. This would be a great read aloud for classrooms or families.

Just read this book. Can't wait for the movie to come out... The first couple of chapters are real tear-jerkers; I was crying on the subway!
Vegetarian and vegetable cooking: The essential encyclopedia of healthy eating by Christine Ingram (1997)
Maguire updates Hans Christian Andersen's "The Little Match Girl" for this Christmas tale originally read aloud on NPR. He manages to make the story a lot less depressing, but it's still a little too depressing for my taste. The illustrations are excellent and very detailed and very much mirror the tone of the story. I would recommend this as a book to keep on the coffee table during the holiday season so that folks have something to read while they're waiting for the turkey to be served.

I failed to knock this one of my list in middle school when the rest of the world was reading it, but I'm happy to say I've gotten around to it since. I was particularly interested in Jonas and his experiences living in community because of my own experiences living in an intentional community during high school. I remember thinking it was so cool to share dreams in the morning with your family, and how upsetting it must have been to lose the ability.

I finished this quite awhile ago and forgot to mark it off. Great read. My overriding memory of what I read: war is awful.

Hmmmm... this book helped me a lot at a time I had opened a door, a pathway inside, that once opened I couldn't close. This book helped me realize I didn't have to fight it. For those not on that path this book will seem meaningless and very esoteric.
