If you've read Dave Eggers before, I can safely say this one is nothing like any of his other books. Not even close. Sometimes, when an author totally changes their tone or voice it annoys me, but in this case, not only did he pull it off, I don't think he had a choice. While the book is technically fiction, it's the story of Valentino, one of the infamous "Lost Boys" that were resettled in the US after suffering through years of war in the Sudan region of Africa. The book begins with Valentino being beaten, tied up, and robbed in his apartment in Atlanta. Besides this being a part of the story that fired me up just about as much as the parts that spoke of his experiences of trying to survive war in his homeland, it was also a brilliant way for Eggers to tell this story (and I heard an NPR interview with the "real" Valentino some months ago and the robbery & beating, while dramatized a bit for the book, actually did happen. Welcome to America, right?). Valentino tells his story of war, family, and survival as if he's speaking to those involved in his robbery experience. While he's falling in and out of consciousness after the initial break in, in his head he's telling the man what he remembers about his village before it was destroyed. What I like most about the book is the title. Valentino explains that there is a story that at the beginning of time God offerend his poeple the choice between cattle, which they already knew would keep them properous and secure, or "the What", and of course, no one knows what "the What" is because it's just that--the unknown. In the story "the What" is viewed as a dangerous choice, but that over the years his people have learned that sometime "the What" is the best thing that could happen. There's something exciting about that.
