Like many have said, this book gives insight to the ex-president's decision basis. The folksy rhetoric (which he and his ghostwriter are a master of) is convincing. One feels sorry for the less than stellar man, who has had so many troubles, and perhaps conquered many personal demons. I admit I was tricked into thinking I have been thinking ill of him for all the wrong reasons. But I must, must, must hold on to the fact that there were so many lies, deceptions and moments of incompetence in his time in the White House. The buck stopped with him, especially as he took every concession to presidential limits that have ever been used in our history and exploited the American political-economic system, foreign compassion and basic trusts of the people for American government. Nixon wrote his memoirs to try to recitify his image and everyone knew it was bunk. I think it is unclear how the US should receive this book. It offers only that people make mistakes and that Bush knows he is not the sharpest tool in the shed. I feel a friendliness towards him after reading this book-(I would invite him as a dinner guest) but I do think he is inept as a leader, and not necessarily a great decision maker. I think the book shows that Bush is still not making the first steps to recovery. He is still in denial and blame shifting. Still, I think it is a book to read. It is worth the insight into this man, and sums up a time period well enough so we can move on. I know I personally feel that the very least this does is put Bush into the category of history, and that, well that does something of a wonder for my soul.
One of my all time favorite reads. Excellently, beautifully written.
I love Adriana Trigiani and she did not disappoint in this book. I still think "Lucia, Lucia" is my favorite, but this one is great too! Be warned there are so implied intimate moments between the main character and her boyfriend, but nothing is graphic or described. That being said, the rest of the book was beautiful! The main character makes shoes and you can just see and feel all the amazing fabrics and embellishments she uses. I really liked this book. I cannot wait for the next one in the series!
bill bryson may not be the greatest artist of prose mankind has ever seen, but heck i hope to someday be able to write like he does funny, insightful, and all these other adjectives that i would list but don't remember because i read this book a long time ago, it couples commentary on the environment with the hysterical hike of two out-of-shape middle aged men. really enjoyable reading
Interesting, important, and inspiring. I'm so glad Greg Mortensen is out there to show us how peace with the Islamic world can really happen: through education and aid! This book is not exactly a page turner, but well worth the time.

Synopsis: The Hunter of the title is Victor, a hired assassin. Following a hit that goes wrong, he ceases to be the hunter and becomes the hunted. The story moves from France, where the hit took place, to Germany and Russia as Victor goes in search of the people who set him up. Scenes at the CIA Head Quarters in Langley, Virginia, inform the reader that there’s a deeper, hidden plot afoot. Victor’s pursuers have inside information on his movements, and track him down even in supposedly safe houses. This results to a series gun battles and explosions, which Victor escapes by skill, cunning and guile. Review: For me, three things made this stand out from the run-of-the-mill shoot-‘em-up thriller. The first was the quality of the writing, which was generally terse and added to the ever-present sense of danger. (There were however, in my opinion, still a few places where the prose could have been tightened up a little more.) The second was Victor’s ever present paranoia – this isn’t quite the right word for his obsessive vigilance as they really were out to get him – but describing it as anything less than paranoia wouldn’t do justice to this aspect of the novel. The sense of always needing to look over your shoulder was scary and oppressive. (It made me feel sorry for people who truly are paranoid.) The third was the character of Victor. I liked the way Tom Wood didn’t feel the need to justify him being a cold-blooded killer, or have him engage in soul searching about his brutal acts. Victor was simply who he was; a psychopath in the true sense of the word, a thrill seeker with few emotions and no empathy. While this was one of the book’s strengths, by definition it means the central character doesn’t have much emotional depth. As such, there isn’t much space for character development over the coming novels. I'm not sure how Tom Wood will deal with this in subsequent books and avoid these becoming a little more than endless gun battles and explosions. So Codenema Tesseract is on my, to read list. Here's hoping . . .
This book was hot i liked it, it was cool because it talks about this girl who came out of a mother stomach but she came out gettho way and they call her winter because she was born on the winter and when some body see her they say santiga daughter cuz u know they form the hood so that is some gettho girl right there so any ways like i was saying about santgia daughter that shes like her father beacuse every thing her father showed her she would do and not only that she just ended up like her father being in jail getting in big trouble like her father always getting in. So eveybody body is scare of santiga daughter cuz he said who ever touches her getting shot in the head no matter what happens to her he said no body messes with santigas daughter so when he father ended up in jail she strating dealing with crack and getting some money any how like sleeping with boys and sucking di** then after all that she got pregnent and she went to jail for some crime she didnt do well i anit telling u no whole story cuz u got to get to know winter by reading the book cuz i anit no story teller
I found the cynicism to be over-the-top and the general feeling to be arrogant and dismissive. Wallace’s playful nature came jumping back in Up, Simba, an essay from the John McCain 2000 campaign trail. I guess I really prefer his fiction.

One of the best first novels I've read in a long time. Most of the reviews I've read praise the comtemporary Ukranian chapters, and aren't as fond of the chapters set in the shtetl, but my reaction was almost the opposite. The magical realism of the shtetl worked for me, and seemed almost necessary in order to offset the horror of the ending that the reader knows cannot be avoided.
