Clell created Cuckoo from her firsthand experience with Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), formerly called Multiple Personality Disorder. [http://www.multiples.net/] The book is told in a series of vignettes which began life as individual issues of a comic called Cuckoo. Through the text and Clell's sketchy, stark black-and-white drawings, Clell explains what DID is and how one develops it, how she discovered she had it, how it has affected her life, and the steps she has taken to make it go away. My life has always been very sheltered and comfortable, so I was horrified to read about what happened to Clell when she was so young -- some of the atrocities are so unspeakable that she does not even depict them in the book, except obliquely. The book made me understand DID better, but also reemphasized for me that we should never assume we know what our fellow human beings have experienced in their lives.

I think I was just too young when I read this book, even though I understood it, I just found it incredibly laborious at the time.
Kate is smart, snarky, and already has a plan for her future. This plan involves working as a trainer for the school football team...it gives her experience before college, and a chance to check out football star Aaron. She's definitely a take charge kind of character, especially after she realizes that she may have played a role in the zombification of a large percent of the football team. The football star wasn't a jerk, hurrah. I was happy that Kate didn't spend her time crushing on a guy who was going to treat her badly. I also think that Jonah, Kate's brother, may have been my favorite character. He tried to protect his family, and was both dorky and awesome. I don't think it's too spoilery to tell you that not everyone survives. I won't say who/how people perish, but it actually made it an interesting zombie book. I mean, it really isn't that fun to read about a zombie epidemic that doesn't actually have consequences. I feel that I should also mention that the zombies were slow. Personal preference, I hate fast zombies. They scare the living daylights out of me. I will say that this one was really short. I read it within a few hours, and I wish there had been more. On the other hand, everything fit really well into the story, so adding length would have been unnecessary, and may have altered the flow of the story. Overall, it was a zombie book that was both surprising and entertaining.

This story appears @ http://singleundeadfemale.blogspot.co.... Jane and Gabriel are moving in together. The only problem is that Jane's overbearing mother doesn't have a clue and her knowing that Jane and Gabriel are living in sin and not getting married any time soon ::shocked look:: is one of those eye rolling moments that you really thought would die out like the 20th century. All cast members from the first three books are involved in the move; Zeb and his werewolf wife Jolene, Aunt Jettie and Mr. Wainwright whose non corporeal presence is fodder for a few laughts; Dick and Andrea who were recently married thanks to the passage of the Undead Marriage Act. Recruit hapless friends willing to be paid in beer/blood and pizza. Check. Schedule move during Mama’s REM cycle. Check. Get rid of Gabriel’s ugly-ass hunting print? Check.

Some really interesting ideas in this book, particularly Jeannette Bastian's essay on the US Virgin Islands "Whispers in the Archives: Finding the Voices of the Colonized in the Records of the Colonizer."
everyone should read this nonfiction book

Fairstein's books take place in NYC and always include historical reference. From her books I have discovered many 'little known' facts about the city. I especially enjoyed the references to the library and Bryant Park in this book, because I actually spent a day on genealogical research here [at the library- not the park - but I did cross over to the park for a hot dog!:]. The overall plot was a disappointment compared to her other books however.
Good, easy, uplifting book for a cold day.

I'm not a non-fiction girl, but this was pretty good once I got moving.
