I don't know that this book is life changing, but it is a delightful and entertaining read. Fun summertime, beach reading.

The 'Hope' series helped keep me sane when I first came to Taiwan. At that time there weren't very many English books available. You had to take what you could get. These books helped alot.

Pretty good. Kinda low key. Hopefully the rest of the series picks up and doesn't try to string us along like the Legacy of the Force series.

The forumula: Boy meets girl. Boy gets girl. Boy blows up bridge. Girl loses boy. This book contains some beautiful sentences and some annoying sentences. Included in the latter is a sentence that uses the word "now" 22 times and the word "one" 21 times. I realize there's a purpose behind all those nows and ones, but it's still annoying. Here is one of the beautiful sentences: "There was very little of it left and one cup of it took the place of the evening papers, of all the old evenings in cafes, of all chestnut trees that would be in bloom now in this month, of the great slow horses of the outer boulevards, of book shops, of kiosques, and of galleries, of the Parc Montsouris, of the Stade Buffalo, and of the Butte Chaumont,of the Guaranty Trust Company and the Ile de la Cite, of Goyot's old hotel, and of being able to read and relax in the evening; of all the things he had enjoyed and forgotten and that came back to him when he tasted that opaque, bitter, tongue-numbing, brain-warming, stomach-warming, idea-changing liquid alchemy."
Can't tell you what I thought because I haven't discussed it with my book club gals yet!! All I say is: "5 stars". Not necessarily because of content (though good too) but more because it was the quick, interesting read I was looking for!!

Interesting. Educational. A good outlook on cultural/differences/difficulties during WWII and the US re-location camps. Heartbreaking because the only conclusions can be bad or worse.

This book is extremely well written, and quite funny at times, but overall I came away with a feeling of sadness as it is so realistic in the rendering of misunderstandings between people who ultimately just want to be loved, heard, seen, understood. In the end, I just didn´t love it, but liked it enough to where I would certainly recommend it as a great read.

This book has an interesting use of language, and it paints a great picture of Brooklyn in the 1970s and 1980s. What the book has in local color, however, is lost by its sometimes confusing narrative, a tale of interracial friendship that weathered by a decade of urban struggle. There are fantastic moments within the novel, but the chronology is uneven, and the themes are unclear. The metaphor of teenage superheroes fighting, literally, a black-and-white battle is engaging. Whether that metaphor realizes itself is still open to question. While this was a fun read for a Brooklynite, I found myself wanting more. Overall, this was a good (albeit puzzling) read.
